The Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka has opened the world’s first attraction area based on Nintendo Co.’s popular Donkey Kong game series, seeking to attract more overseas as well as domestic visitors.

The Donkey Kong Country area, which opened Wednesday, expands by 70 percent the park’s existing Super Nintendo World area, featuring augmented reality attractions based on iconic characters such as Mario.

For fans of the Donkey Kong Country video games series, the setting should be a satisfying re-creation of a world that originated with the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom in Japan) from the early 1990s.

Much like the neighboring area themed on the Super Mario series, the attention to detail in Donkey Kong Country is impressive. From the music — you’ll be hard-pressed to leave without getting “DK Island Swing” stuck in your head — to the decorative crates and barrels that are a staple of the series right up to the giant Golden Temple at the center of the area, USJ’s set designers hit all the right notes here.

In and around the temple is where the main attraction lies: Mine Cart Madness, a faithful re-creation of the signature mine cart levels in the Donkey Kong series. The ride, which features single cars that seat four riders, starts with passengers getting shot out of a comically oversized barrel while suspended above the track, creating the illusion that you’re leaping off the rails — a creative way to pay homage to the source material.

Donkey Kong fans will spot several characters from the series as they travel through the Golden Temple. There are a couple of steeper drops but this is still very much a roller-coaster fit for families: The drops and turns of Mine Cart Madness are unlikely to get the heart of a true roller-coaster enthusiast racing, but it offers enough thrills to satisfy the young and old.
