Hiking the Petrified Dunes | Snow Canyon State Park

The Petrified Dunes trail offers an incredible journey through the sandstone mounds of Snow Canyon State Park, where iron domes guide the most direct route across the dunes. Once on the sandstone, you’re free to explore the undulating terrain, where you might come across moqui marbles—small, iron-rich rock formations that have naturally developed over time.

I personally hiked up alone (without Kobe) due to the steep and sometimes slippery rock, and the effort was absolutely worth it. The views were breathtaking, with perfect weather—61°F at 4:30 PM. Given the minimal shade, this cooler temperature made the hike much more enjoyable. There hasn’t been recent rainfall, so the depressions and potholes remained dry, but the scattered trees along the dunes added a beautiful contrast to the sandstone.

I stayed to watch the sunset, and afterward, I made my way to the Snow Canyon Overlook to take in a full view of the park. If you’re planning to hike this trail, be prepared for steep slopes, uneven surfaces, and little shade—wear good footwear and bring water!
