[Japan Travel Tips] Arima Onsen / 有馬温泉 Hidden Spots, Stunning Views
Arima Onsen – Japan’s oldest and most famous hot spring
Arima Onsen is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and boasts a history of over 1,400 years. This hot spring, which was a favorite of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is one of the “Three Oldest Hot Springs” and “Three Famous Hot Springs” in Japan, and is very popular throughout Japan.
Arima Onsen is characterized by two types of spring water: Kin-sen (gold spring) and Gin-sen (silver spring). Kinsen is rich in iron and salt and turns reddish brown when exposed to air, which helps retain moisture and improve sensitivity to cold. Silver springs, on the other hand, include carbonic acid and radium springs, which are effective in promoting blood circulation and relieving fatigue.
The onsen town is lined with quaint inns and souvenir stores, and visitors can enjoy the famous “soda rice crackers” and dishes made with local ingredients. Another attraction is its location surrounded by the natural beauty of Mt. Rokko, where visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons.
