沖縄 Okinawa Bike Camping [Day 6 Ikei Island to Itoman Chura-Sun Beach]
Check out day 6 of my 500km Okinawa circumnavigation bike camping adventure. With 357 kilometers behind me from the five days I am heading out in the rain with the wind at my back south to somewhere around the southern tip of Okinawa.
This flip flop navigator adventure is day 6 of my 500 kilometer bicycle circumnavigation of the island of Okinawa in Southern Japan.
On day 6 I wake up near Ikei Island on my gracious hosts from porch then head out in the rain with the wind at my back.
With 357 kilometers behind me from the first five days of riding I go south as far as my legs will take me to somewhere around the southern point of Okinawa.
Okinawa has undergone significant land reclamation since its reversion to Japanese control in 1972.
Over approximately 10 square kilometers have been added through reclamation projects.
A study in 2018 analyzed the island’s coastline and found 45% of the total coastline had been altered due to land-filling activities. The reclamation has led to the loss of coral reefs and mangrove forests, and has increased the need for artificial coastal defenses.

The manhole cover in Nakagusuku features a classical Ryukyuan poem inscribed in Okinawan language
「とよむ中城 吉の浦のお月 みかけ照りわたて さびやねさみ」
In standard Japanese, this reads:
「豊む中城 吉の浦の月 見かけ照り渡て さびやねさみ」
Translated to English, the poem describes:
“Viewing the beautiful and peaceful moon from Nakagusuku Castle towards Yoshinoura, with no worries about accidents or sorrow.”

I want to mention that while it is crappy and rainy out today,,, there is still no place that I would rather be than outside riding my bike around Okinawa!

Let me know what you like, what you don’t like, or what you’d like to see.
At the end of the day my odometer was at 100 kilometers ridden in 8 hours and 40 minutes bringing the trip total to 458 kilometers.
I rinsed in the bathroom, took a walk around Itoman Chura-Sun Beach Park, ate the food I bought at the Family Mart, crawled in my Zenbivy quilt, and called it a night.
Stay tuned for day seven where I ride from the beach in Itoman, through Naha, down Kokusai street, to the fish market for lunch, and back to Yomitan where I started.

Not a good day weatherwise but it is very apparent you still enjoyed continuing your trip. Again, your descriptions and comments on various historical areas and different things (drain covers – signs on walls – monuments) significant to areas make it even more interesting. The sound and excitement in your voice shows you are totally enjoying your adventure. Good for you. Always take care and stay safe.
