[Power Spot Tour]
Ito History Museum Part 1
Special Exhibition: Kibi and Ito Province
This is a museum in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Itoshima City is the location believed to be Ito Province, which appears in the Gishiwajinden.
I think this is beyond doubt, given the ancient tombs and ruins that are representative of the Hirahara ruins.
The Ito History Museum displays many pieces of evidence.
But I’m curious about the special exhibition…
I got in first (laughs)
Kibi is located in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea, around Okayama and Hiroshima.
It was an important area as a port for shipping in the Seto Inland Sea.
Its history is unclear, but it is said to be the country of Tomakoku in the Gishiwajinden.
I think it’s different.
This exhibition presents Kibi as Tomakuni, and although there is certainly some exchange with Kitakyushu, it does not seem to be in the same cultural sphere.
Kibi has its own unique culture, including arched stones, special vessel pedestals, and triangular patterns, but when looking at the burial goods in the Tatetsuki tumuli, the influence of Izumo can be seen.
I believe Kibi was one of the Izumo kingdoms.
This can also be seen in the grave goods found in the Tatetsuki tumulus.
It was probably the gateway to the Seto Inland Sea for the Izumo Kingdom.
I think it was connected from Kibi to Miyoshi to Izumo.
Perhaps that is why they joined forces with the Yamato Court after it gained independence from Izumo in the Kinki region, and sided with the Yamato Court.
For the Yamato court, which had become independent from Izumo, Izumo was an obstacle and a country that needed to be defeated.
To achieve this, he took control of the Hokuriku region, incorporated Kibi, and defeated Wakoku, thereby cutting off the flow of iron to Izumo.
After that, they attacked Izumo and defeated him.
This may also be represented in the Izumo mythology when Takemikazuchi, the god of thunder, appears on Inasa Beach riding on an iron sword.
Bronze bells, which could be said to be evidence that the artefacts were sent from Izumo to the Yamato court, were also on display.
After Izumo was destroyed, burial methods were standardized by the Yamato court and the keyhole-shaped tumulus was established.
From Kibi come special vessel pedestals (cylindrical haniwa, sculpted haniwa), and protruding items used in rituals.
From Wakoku, circles, huge burial mounds, and abundant burial goods were found.
From Izumo, there are square roofing stones covering the burial mound.
The Yamato court placed a bronze bell, a mirror made from cast copper, near the buried victim, including a triangular-rimmed mirror with divine beasts.
These were combined to adopt a style known as a keyhole-shaped tumulus, which was used as the tombs of local chieftains.
By doing so, they were able to show off the keyhole-shaped tumulus and make people aware that it was part of the Yamato court.
That is how important Kibi is as a region.
I wanted to go there, but I was able to see it in Kyushu.
Well, I really want to go there someday!!
