I Accidentally Summitted Mount Fuji in a Typhoon

A Week in Japan – https://youtu.be/kI1u2rg7vYs

After my first trip to Japan last year, I knew I would be back at some point to attempt to summit Mount Fuji. “Some point” fortunately was able to happen this year, when I realized somewhat last minute we would be able to fit in traveling to Japan while it was still climbing season, and Mount Fuji was still snowless. We decided to hike the Yoshida Trail, starting at the Subaru 5th Station, as it was the easiest to access without a car. We also chose to do our summit attempt as a day hike, as opposed to staying overnight in a hut. I feel summiting Mount Fuji as a day hike is achievable for your average relatively fit and active person, however, the biggest issue we ran into on Mount Fuji, was actually the weather. The day had started out pretty nice, maybe slightly chilly, but totally comfortable once you were moving. But then, the typhoon that had been predicted for later came in a bit earlier, and made everything more difficult. I’m not unaccustomed to hiking in the rain, but this was on a whole other level.

  1. I enjoyed following your climb and commentary from the comfort of my chair. I climbed Fuji san at night back in 1996 from the Fujinomiya trail and luckily we had good weather although the temperature severely dropped at night. The view of the sunrise and the five lakes from the summit was awesome and have been lodged deep into my brain for all these years.
I'm in my mid 60s now and my mountain climbing days are behind me now, but the spirit of Fuji san will remain in my heart forever.
I hope that you can return to Japan again and experience climbing Mt.Fuji during better weather someday. Cheers and happy new year.🗻

  2. nice video! question, Do you hike down the same trail you came up? I saw some videos where they mention a different descending trail to avoid congestion. if so is it rocky going down? im climbing in july and was wondering about the difficulty on the rocky parts.
