Yoshitomo Nara in Aomori Museum of Art
Nara Yoshitomo was born in 1959 in Hirosaki City, near Aomori. He moved to Tokyo after graduating from Hirosaki High School in Aomori Prefecture in 1978.
In 1981, he enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music to major in oil painting in the Department of Fine Arts.
He then traveled to Germany in 1988 to study and develop his skills in both Dusseldorf and Cologne.
Nara returned to Japan in 2000, and in 2001 held his first solo exhibition “I dont mind if you forget me” which was shown in five cities in Japan, starting with the Yokohama Museum of Art.
In 2003, the solo exhibition “Nothing Ever Happens,” featuring Nara’s works from 1997 onward, was held in five cities in the U.S., including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland.
The “A to Z” exhibition held in 2006 at the Yoshii Brick Brewhouse in Hirosaki City can be considered the culmination of this series.
Today, his work is in major museums around the world.
The Aomori Museum of Art began collecting Nara’s works in 1998 and now owns over 170 of them. Nara’s works are exhibited as part of the museum’s permanent collection on a rotating basis. In addition, monumental works such as the giant dog statue Aomori-ken (Aomori Dog) can also be seen. Hirosaki, his hometown, and Tochigi, where he has his studio, are also notable places to see his work.

奈良美智は1959年、青森県弘前市に生まれる。1978年、青森県立弘前高等学校卒業後、上京。
1981年、愛知県立芸術大学芸術学部美術科油画専攻に入学。
1988年、ドイツに渡り、デュッセルドルフとケルンで研鑽を積む。
2000年に帰国し、2001年に初の個展「I dont mind if you forget me」を開催。横浜美術館を皮切りに、国内5都市で開催。
2003年には、1997年以降の作品を集めた個展「Nothing Ever Happens」をクリーブランド現代美術館を含む米国5都市で開催。
2006年に弘前市吉井煉瓦工場で開催された「A to Z」展は、このシリーズの集大成ともいえる。
現在、彼の作品は世界の主要な美術館に収蔵されている。
青森県立美術館は1998年から奈良作品の収集を始め、現在170点以上を所蔵している。同美術館では、奈良作品が常設コレクションとして入れ替え展示されているほか、巨大な犬の像「あおもり犬」などの記念碑的な作品も見ることができる。故郷の弘前や、アトリエがある茨城県の茨城県も、彼の作品を観るのに名所である。

Nara Yoshitomo nació en 1959 en la ciudad de Hirosaki, cerca de Aomori. Se trasladó a Tokio después de graduarse en la escuela de secundaria de Hirosaki en la prefectura de Aomori en 1978.
En 1981, se inscribió en la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad de Bellas Artes y Música de la prefectura de Aichi para especializarse en pintura al óleo en el Departamento de Bellas Artes.
Después viajó a Alemania en 1988 para estudiar y desarrollar sus facultades tanto en Dusseldorf como en Colonia.
Nara regresó a Japón en el 2000, y en 2001 realizó la primera exposición individual “I don´t mind if you forget me”, que se presentó en cinco cidades de Japón, comenzando por el Museo de Arte de Yokohama.
En 2003, la exposición individual “Nothing Ever Happens”, que presentaba las obras de Nara de 1997 en adelante, se realizó en cinco ciudades de los EE. UU., incluido el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Cleveland.
La exposición “A to Z” que se celebró en 2006 en la cervecería Yoshii Brick Brewhouse de la ciudad de Hirosaki puede considerarse la culminación de esta serie.
Actualmente su obra está en los principales museos del Mundo.
El Museo de Arte de Aomori comenzó a coleccionar las obras de Nara en 1998 y ahora posee más de 170 de ellas. Las obras de Nara se exhiben como parte de la colección permanente del museo de forma rotativa. Además, también se pueden ver obras monumentales como la estatua del perro gigante Aomori-ken (Perro Aomori). En Hirosaki, ciudad natal y Tochigi donde tiene su estudio son también lugares destacados para conocer su obra.
