Sweden’s Best Train: LUXURY or LET DOWN?

Hello and welcome— or should I say hej och välkommen—to Goteborg Centralstahoon, or Gothenburg Central Station! Today we’re taking a ride on VR’s Snabbtag Sverige high speed service to Stockholm. We’ll be traveling in what VR calls first class plus, a first class product with little in the way of first class amenities.

Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed!

I sincerely apologize if any pronunciations are incorrect!

  1. These "first class seats" seem close to the seat comfort on the capitol corridor. Problem is CC isnt even close to a "first class train". Ive almost given up on european trains having amazing seats.

  2. Why is the term "high-speed" being thrown around like this?
These trains can go up to 200km/h. Maximum speed on the Swedish network is 200km/h.
    200km/h is conventional speed!

  3. We took SJ's first class from Stockholm to Gothenburg – our experience was only a little better. Seats were nicer and seating was 2 + 1. The attendant has a bee in her bonnet about something, yelled at people for getting in her way and literally threw the boxed breakfast on the tables in front of people without a word.

  4. Yeah… VR Sweden's 1st class product is essentially the same as DSB's down in Denmark. Except you dont even get a meal in first class there, only a breakfast if you travel in the morning and only on a Lyntog or Eurocity train. And the new IC5 EMU's theyre getting (which are also 5 car low floor EMU's much like these) also wont have any dedicated 1st class seating. DSB claims its so they can have a flexible setup and allocate zones for each kind of offer like family zones, quiet zones, and 1st class based on demand of the journey, since they intend to use the same rolling stock or both short commuter journeys, and long distance cross country trains.

At the very least DSB's 1st class is at a fully fixed price and always 130 DKK over the fixed standard class ticket that like the first class tickets are fully refundable and valid for any departure, unlike the discounted dynamically priced Orange tickets they sell.

VR Sweden's train is definitely more fit as a low cost option given that their 2nd class tickets are a solid 200 SEK cheaper than SJ's.

What I will say might be Swedens best train though is probably Snälltåget, the open access operator owned by Transdev who operate mainly between Stockholm and Malmö and Copenhagen (as well as seasonal overnight trains to Åre in Swedens north, Berlin in Germany and Zell am See in Austria), with arguably the best dining car in Northern Europe. All while offering affordable journeys in an extremely cozy environment. I hope you got to check their service out while in Sweden cause itd be a massive shame if you didnt tbh.

  5. I saw the thumbnail and had major whiplash, VR? Sweden? Only to google and find out, VR bought Swedish transport company Arriva in 2022! Had no idea! It's so shocking to me, because VR is short for "Valtion Rautatiet", Finnish for "State's Railways" as it's our national state owned train company in Finland who runs all our trains (for now, local routes will have competition soonish).

  6. Definitely not Sweden’s best train in terms of comfort or even first class imo. Only thing they are better at than SJ is punctuality.
