Travelling here will truly make you feel like you’ve gone back in time! Located on the Nakasendō, a 534km route that stretched from Kyoto to Edo (now Tokyo), this town was an important stop along one of the most important routes in Japan. Known as the Gokaidō or ‘Five Great Routes’, they connected Tokyo to much of the shogunate, which in turn strengthened Shōgun Tokugawa’s political power.
One of Tokugawa’s rules for the daimyō – the feudal lords – was that they had to spend one year of every two in Edo. This meant that every other year, the routes would see huge processions traversing to reach Edo and vice versa! This must have been quite the sight to see 😱
Welcome to beautiful Magome-juku, a restored post town located in the prefecture of Gifu 🇯🇵
Magome-juku (with ‘-juku’ signifying that it’s a post town) was just one of the sixty-nine (hehe) post towns along the Nakasendō. Not all the post towns have survived, and some post towns actually became big towns and cities (for example, Nagoya was once just a post town!). Magome was destroyed by fire in 1895 and 1915 but in the past few decades has been restored to its Edo period glory.
Exploring this historic post town is absolutely worthwhile and walking part of the Nakasendō makes you feel like you’re living history!
