Okinawa Bike Camping [Day 3 Yagaji Beach to Sosu Beach]
Day 3 Yagaji Beach to Sosu Beach
This Flip Flop Navigator adventure is day 3 of my 500 kilometer bicycle circumnavigation of the island of Okinawa in Southern Japan.
On day 3 I wake up to strong winds at a campground on Yagaji Island pack up my gear and head north against the wind to Ogimi village where I visit the Bashofu workshop and ride through the village that has the most centenarians in the world.
After lunch I head to Hedo Point, the northernmost point in Okinawa and go south down the east coast to my second wild camping night of the trip.
After World War II the economic devastation forced many Okinawans to leave their homeland and emigrate South America, especially Brazil and Peru, where they sought better opportunities for a more stable life.
Ogimi Village known as the village of centenarians” due to its extraordinary number of people who live to 100 or beyond.
Okinawa as a whole is known for having one of the highest life expectancies in the world, but Ogimi has the highest percentage of centenarians in the world.
Many believe the Bashofu tradition in Ogimi contributes to their longevity because of the sense of identity and pride in the community.
In addition the bashofu workers called Bashofushi or master weaver continues to experience mental stimulation and cognitive engagement their whole lives.
The Bashofu workshop is a must see place.
There are 9 steps to Bashofu, each requiring a high level of craftsmanship and a deep understanding of traditional techniques.
Because the process is so time-consuming and intricate, bashōfu production has been historically done by skilled artisans or families who pass down their knowledge through generations.
Do you want cake?
Cake?
Yes I can eat cake?

Then soki soba please
800 yen
The soki soba was very delicious, thank you!
Most of these (parasol) shops only have hotdogs and ice cream so I thought that is all there would be. I am happy you have soki soba. The meal was delicious, thank you!
Ganbattte! = do you best/keep fighting/keep going!
I noticed there are little steps going into the drainage ditch, it must be so if Yanbaru Kuina chicks fall in they can get out on the jungle side not the road side.
Day 3 was a rough day of riding against the wind then up and down the hills of Okinawa’s Northeastern coastline, I will sleep well tonight.
The wind is still howling so I decided to setup under the bridge instead of on the beach. The plan for the evening is to take a dip in the river, eat, copy videos to my computer, and sleep 🙂
Stay tuned for day four of my 500 kilometer circumnavigation of Okinawa, Tomorrow I am heading down the east coast to Ginoza or maybe even Kin.

As you know I have traveled around Okinawa a lot. You travel and descriptions of places intrigue me into going back to places with a better understanding of what they are and what they represent. Another great, scenic and informative video. Thank you and looking forward to the next one. Take care and stay safe.
