【4K Stroll】Former Fukiya Elementary School – Okayama – Japan / A Wooden School From a Bygone Era
✋Hello! Today we will admire a wooden school building built in the early 20th century. Children studied in this historic building until 2012, and at that time it was the oldest operating wooden school in Japan.
The former Fukiya Elementary School is located in in Okayama Prefecture, in the small village of Fukiya, known for its past copper mining. The construction of the eastern and western school buildings was completed in 1900, and the main building in 1909. At the school’s peak in 1918, 369 students attended it. After the mine closed in 1972, the number of students dropped, but the school did not close until 2012. The main building was designed by Saburohachi Egawa, and it is regarded as a prime example of Western-style school architecture from the Meiji era and has been designated an important cultural property by prefectural authorities. In 2015, a project was initiated focused on the preservation and repair of ground and structural reinforcement. The work was completed in 2022 and the school was opened to visitors. Today, the school building is a museum, and the school’s outdoor swimming pool has been transformed into a beautiful pond.
May happiness be with this place.
