Winter Hiking in Japan

Icy trees and blustery winds at the top of Mt. Karakuni, a volcano on the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures! ❄️

During this winter trek, there were fantastic views of Onami Lake, Mt. Takachiho, a steam-spewing crater, and other peaks in the distance. It was an amazing winter climb! 🏔️

It took about two hours to reach the top, going at a slow pace with many stops. The path was rocky and uphill pretty much the entire time. 🪨

In the morning it was icy, but coming down the ice had melted so it was more muddy. 🥾

The peak at 1,700 meters was extremely windy and cold. Even wearing gloves, my fingers froze. 🥶

There is a rest station near the top to take a breather and shield from the cold. 🏠

In the parking lot, there is a hot foot bath, small shop, and nice bathrooms. ♨️

Parking costs 500 yen.
