How to Book Shinkansen Tickets Online
In this video, I’ll guide you through booking Shinkansen tickets online. Since the Japan Rail Pass has significantly increased in price, buying tickets individually via an app is often a more cost-effective option.

Step 1: Download the EX App
* Open the App Store or Google Play and search for “EX App”.
* Download and install the app. With this app, you can buy Shinkansen tickets between Tokyo and Kagoshima.
Step 2: Register for Membership
* Registration may be easier on a PC. The app and website are linked via the ID created during registration so don’t worry. Remember your password for future use.
* Follow the registration instructions, add your details, and complete the process.
Step 3: Booking Tickets on the App
1. Log in and select “Shinkansen Tickets”.
2. Choose your travel date, departure and destination stations, and number of tickets.
3. For a round trip on the same day, tick “Book a round trip”.
4. Add seat preferences or conditions, or skip if unnecessary.
5. Press “Search”.
6. Review the notice and press “Continue”.
7. Select your train:Please note, these are the types of Shinkansen.
* Nozomi: Fastest, from Tokyo to Hakata
* Hikari: Faster, from Tokyo to Hakata
* Kodama: Stops at all stations from Tokyo to Hakata.
* Mizuho: Fastest, from ShinOsaka to Kagoshima
* Sakura: Faster, from ShinOsaka to Kagoshima.
* Tsubame: Stops all stations from Hakata to Kagoshima. (*some are from ShinShimonoseki to Hakata too)
8. Choose your seat type: Ordinary or Green, Premium Seat
9. If traveling during busy times, select “Seats can be separated” to improve your chances of securing seats.
10. Confirm the summary and press “Purchase”.
For non-reserved seats, select “Non-reserved seat” and follow the same steps.
Step 4: Issuing Paper Tickets
If you’re traveling with companions, you’ll need to issue paper tickets:
1. At the station, find a ticket machine with the EX icon.
2. Open the EX app, log in, and tap the top-right icon to select “Issue Pick-up Code”. Display the QR code.
3. At the machine, select your language, tap “Read QR Code”, and scan the code to print your tickets.
Tip: Issue tickets just before boarding cos once issuing paper ticket, it’s hard to change your booking.
