Our cycling adventure across Okinawa continues as we leave Onna and head toward Nago City, eventually reaching the stunning Kouri Island!
Exploring Nago City
Located in the northern part of Okinawa, Nago City is a serene and picturesque area known for its natural beauty and pristine beaches. Interestingly, about 10% of the city is occupied by a U.S. military base, adding a unique dynamic to its culture and landscape. Nago is a place where cleanliness is a way of life—there’s no litter, even by the riversides, as everyone is responsible for managing their own trash.
After stopping at a 7/11 convenience store for breakfast, we continued our ride, enjoying the calm atmosphere and lush surroundings.
A Scenic Journey to Kouri Island
Our destination for the day was Kouri Island, which is about 50 km away and accessible only by crossing two other islands: Yagaji Island and a 2 km-long stretch of land connecting Yagaji to Kouri.
Yagaji Island: This beautiful island offered a peaceful ride through sugarcane and rice fields, with breathtaking views of the coastline.
Kouri Island: Known for its iconic beaches and scenic views, Kouri Island is a paradise for nature lovers. The ride across the connecting road was a highlight of the trip, with picturesque beaches on either side and people enjoying the tranquil waters.
At the top of Kouri Island, we found a campsite with spectacular views. Setting up our tent was challenging due to strong winds, but we managed to secure it with some effort. We ended the day with some snacks from Lawson, instant noodles, and a sense of accomplishment.
Why Visit Kouri Island?
Kouri Island, often called the “Love Island,” is famous for its romantic ambiance, turquoise waters, and pristine beaches. It’s a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering plenty of spots for relaxation and exploration.
Stay tuned as we continue uncovering the beauty of Okinawa’s islands in the next leg of our adventure!
