Nakayama Senmaida (Thousand Rice Terraces)

This traditional rural landscape expands across the mountain slopes of central Shodoshima Island. Terraced rice fields are built on sloping land in order to enable rice production in the mountains. An area where these terraces are concentrated is called ‘senmaida’ (thousand rice terraces). In Japan there are many mountain areas with terraced rice fields. This must see area features approximately 800 rice terraces of all sizes, lined up across the slopes of this rich natural environment.
