In this video, you’ll take an immersive walk through Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Japan, where you’ll not only get to see the inside of the shrine, but you’ll also be able to bookmark travel tips.
Yasaka Shrine has long been associated with the Kyoto Geisha community in the nearby Gion district, and is a bustling, colourful and delightful downtown shrine that is at the heart of many of Kyoto’s festive traditions.
The shade of trees everywhere shields people as they make pilgrimages to the various buildings dedicated to different souls. You’ll hear brass bells ringing frequently (to awaken the spirits), the clanging of 5 or 10 yen coins falling into collection containers, and the loud clapping of hands as people complete their prayers and petitions.
The history of this shrine dates back to at least 876, when Father Enzu invited Gozu Tenno, the god of disease prevention, to visit the shrine to stop epidemics and other calamities that plagued Kyoto residents at the time. This was also the beginning of the famous Gion Matsuri festival, which is alive with gorgeous colourful floats and people dressed in ancient costumes, and parades are active at Yasaka Shrine. It is now one of the three major festivals in Kyoto and attracts spectators from all over the world.
