making senbei crackers is hard 🙁 | Kawagoe, Japan
Senbei baking starts with a dense, hard cake, which puffs and curls as it’s heated up. You really have to get the timing right for the cake to cook evenly all the way through, and puff flat and as large as possible. It’s quite the art, and much trickier than it seems, despite the shopkeeper’s very clear, detailed instructutions!
This activity will only take about 15 minutes in total to learn and to make your 3 attempts, as long as there’s no queue. It’s simple enough that children can give it a go, too – we may have been bested by an 8-year-old.
