[Kagoshima ] Discover Sakurajima island, (Bonus) Skin care for cruise life [鹿兒島] @bowiewongworld
Kagoshima is a lovely city in southern Kyushu, Japan. It’s often called the “Naples of the East” because of its warm climate, beautiful waterfront, and nearby active volcano, Sakurajima.
1. Welcome to Kagoshima!
Kagoshima is a lively city with a mix of nature, history, and culture. It’s famous for its hot springs, yummy local food, and, of course, Sakurajima, the famous volcano right across the bay.
2. Getting to Sakurajima
The easiest way to get to Sakurajima is by ferry. The ferry terminal is in downtown Kagoshima, and there are ferries that leave every 20 minutes during the day. The ride is short and sweet—only 15 minutes—and you’ll get amazing views of the volcano. The best part? It’s super affordable, costing just about 200 yen for a one-way trip. Ferries run 24/7, so you can plan a visit even at night for a unique experience.
3. Exploring Sakurajima
Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, but don’t worry—it’s well-monitored and safe to visit. The island has lots of cool things to see:
• Nagisa Lava Trail: A scenic walk through lava fields made by past eruptions.
• Foot Baths: Relax your feet in natural hot spring foot baths while soaking in the view.
• Sakurajima Visitor Center: Learn about the volcano’s history and geology. To get around, you can use the Sakurajima Island View bus, which takes you to all the main sights.
4. A Stop at Tsukiyomi Shrine
If you’re looking for a serene and spiritual experience, visit Tsukiyomi Shrine. This small but significant Shinto shrine is dedicated to Tsukuyomi, the moon god in Japanese mythology. It’s a peaceful spot, surrounded by nature, where you can appreciate the traditional architecture and atmosphere. It’s perfect for adding a reflective moment to your Sakurajima adventure.
5. Ferry Back to Kagoshima
When you’re ready to head back, the ferry is just as convenient and scenic in reverse. Pro tip: Grab some local snacks from the shops near the terminal—they’re the perfect treat after a day of exploring.
