   South Yarra is not middle class, definitely upper middle class to well off. Whilst there are some public housing towers that impact the average, average weekly wage in South Yarra is approx $2100 per WEEK. the median weekly wage, which is almost $800 above the median wage, and $300 above the average.

   The Prahran market used to be good for cheap fruit and vegetables that were better than the supermarkets, such a shame that's gone.
   Markets used to have everything cheaper than anywhere else and still be as good or better than elsewhere and had a really cool vibe.
   Haggling was accepted so long as you weren't insulting with the haggling which was great.

    Glad you like it – my home town. Beautiful place. Head to the Botanical Gardens, absolutely gorgeous and close proximity to the city. Walk along the river into the city along the boardwalk all the way to crown casino, a beautiful walk.

    Don''t forget to check out the penguins on Phillip Island. Prahran is pronounced with a silent 'r' in the first syllable: Pah-ran. Yes, Melbourne style is definitely vintage and grungy.

    In Melbourne those "lower class" apartments are more expensive than the new glass high rises. Older buildings have more reliable construction. I live in the new ones you pointed at.

    if you're willing on going out a little further on the train, I'd really recommend Oakleigh for Greek food/coffee and Springvale for Vietnamese food/coffee

    We Australians are friendly.
    Visitors never pronounce any of our places correctly.
    So when you get to a place, Just ask an Aussie how to pronounce a place, we dont mind repeating it a few times, till you get it right.

    For example.
    Not melBORN but, melBN. Theres almost no vowels between the b and the n

    Not praHAN but purrRAN.
    So yeah, just ask.. it will be our pleasure…

    Sydney inner suburbs are a water and beach culture because of the waterways and beaches and warmer weather…..depends what you likex…..i love the warmer climate so Melbourne's not my favourite place

    Melbourne may have more cafe's per capita in the world but if you head west to the rural town of Ballarat they have the most churches and pubs per capita. Gold mining town with a strong Irish heritage but an unfortunate history given the colonial history with regard to the indigenous population as well as one of the worlds largest population that has suffered from the abuse of the Catholic church.
    Just saying this is part of the history that we have here that comes from Britain and is worth recognising.
    I recognise the problems the Irish have with the English but just a little word to your audience would go a long way.

    Prahran and Yarra are both words derived from aboriginal languages but changed by the colonial settlers. Kinda surprised Glen, that being of Irish decent that you are not aware of all of the white colonial names that mark this land:

    King St, William St, Queen St, Elizabeth St, Swanson St, Russell St, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Richmond, Abbotsford, Carlton, Brighton, Elwood, Croydon, Footscray, Elwood, Queen Victoria market, Northcote, Coburg, Preston, Kylsyth, Sydney, Cooks Point, Phillip Bay, Phillip Island, Flinders Island, Perth, Adelaide, Hepburn, Foster, Hastings, Lake Wellington, Tasman sea, Batemans Bay, Queensland, Brisbane, Darwin, Albion, Bankstown, Chatswood, Springfield….

    I guess my point is that being from Scottish and Irish decent I was hoping that you guys might like to embrace more of the diversity of this country that I love… go out and find the real people that live here in places that aren't just stereotypes that make Australia look like a 'tourist destination'.

    The prices of those "cheaper" units would shock you. They would not be a cheap buy. South Yarra is considered an inner city suburb.

    Cranbourne has a Botanical gardens that is stunning and only has Australian native plants. Worth visit. It's maybe a 30-45 minute drive down the Eastlink.

    Should check out armadale- very upmarket and beautiful shops. Near the train station there is is a cute arcade and wine bar 🙂
