Bentenjima Shrine sits on a rocky outcropping on the east coast, connected by a beautiful red bridge. The cliff here is layered with little shrines and statues, and you can walk right up to the vermilion torii gate to get great views over the Pacific Ocean.
It’s also known as Wanigafuchi after a wanizame (crocodile shark) that reportedly roamed the island, caused powerful waves and spirited away unwary visitors. When I worked as an English teacher I once showed my students a Photoshopped ‘gorilla bird’ who was very popular so I was immediately interested
