The Nakasendo Trail has been used for about 400 years, with feudal lords from all over Japan using it to get to Tokyo to serve the shogun during the Samurai period.
The Kisoji portion of the Nakasendo Trail is the most prosperous part—the 11 post towns in the Kiso Valley, 3 most famous ones being Magome-juku, Tsumago-juku, and Narai-juku.
🚝Getting there:
From north you can start at the city of Matsumoto, take the Chuo Line towards Nakatsugawa, you can get to Narai in about an hour.
From south you can take the Chuo Line from Nagoya to Nakatsugawa in about 75 minutes, then from there you can take the Magome bus to Magome and Tsumago.
🛌🏻Where to stay: Any of these post towns have traditional guesthouses that give you a Japanese cultural experience like-no-other!
We stayed at the neighboring town Nakatsugawa, which will be more convenient if you need more food options/late night food etc.
🌞Best season to go:
Anytime between April to November
**Summer is actually very mild in the Kiso Valley! Temperature remained around mid-70 degrees most of the day, with rain here and there.

Mt. Ontake (second biggest volcano in Japan—Mt. Fuji being the first)
Ryujin Waterfall in the Yumori Park – something we wanted to see but couldn’t.
Tsukechi Gorge, and many other national forest, waterfalls, mountains

中山道は約400年前から利用されており、武士の時代には日本中の大名が将軍に仕えるために上京した。
中山道の木曽路は、木曽谷に11の宿場町があり、馬籠宿、妻籠宿、奈良井宿が有名である。
🚝 行き方：
北からは松本市内から中央線で中津川方面へ、奈良井までは約1時間。
南からは名古屋から中央線で中津川まで約75分、そこから馬込バスで馬込、妻籠へ。
🛌🏻どこに泊まるか： どの宿場町にも伝統的な民宿があり、他では味わえない日本文化を体験できる！
私たちは隣町の中津川に泊まったが、食事や夜食が必要な場合は中津川の方が便利だろう。
ベストシーズン：
4月から11月の間ならいつでも。
**木曽谷の夏はとても穏やかだ！気温は一日の大半を70度半ばで過ごし、雨も時々降る。
