The Fukiage Sand Dunes, one of the three largest sand dunes in Japan, are located on the west coast of the Satsuma Peninsula, facing the East China Sea and stretching approximately 45 kilometers from north to south, forming a long arc.The dunes are covered with a forest of black pine trees for erosion control, and recreational facilities such as nature trails, campgrounds, and a national dormitory are available for visitors to fully enjoy the magnificent nature of the sea, including sea bathing and dragnet fishing.It is also famous as a spawning ground for sea turtles, which lay their eggs on the beach every year at night from late spring through summer.In 1988, Kagoshima Prefecture enacted the nation’s first sea turtle protection ordinance, and is making efforts to protect them.
