Ships travelling in and out of Naha Port, which is a base for trade with various countries, would look at Naminoue shrine and its shrine enshrined on the high cliffs to pray for safe voyages and thanksgiving. People pray for a good catch of fish, and every New Year’s month, the king leads a group of celebrities from all over the world to pay homage to the shrine and pray for the safety of the nation. Naminoue shrine ranks first among the eight shrines in the Ryukyus and is revered as ‘the number one shrine in the country. During the Meiji period, it was classified as a small shrine with official currency and was the greatest shrine protecting Okinawa, but it was burned down during the Great War.
After the war, the main hall and the social office were rebuilt in 1928 and the front hall in 1936. In the fifth year of the Heisei era, the Heisei’s imperial camp completed the part of the temple other than the main hall. In the 18th year of the Heisei era, it was designated as a Naha City Historical and Cultural Property.
