■Description
The Goshikinuma Ponds are located in an area called Urabandai, the northern area of Mt. Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture. The eruption of Mt. Bandai in 1888 formed numerous lakes and ponds, which we can take a walk today. This 4km hiking trail is well maintained and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
Goshikinuma literally means five colors, but here, it means a multitude of various colors. Also, there are apparently more than 30 swamps in the area, not five. These lakes and swamps were named as such because they show a multitude of different colors due to various factors, including the volcanic water quality, aquatic plants, and the way the light hits them.
