In this video, we visit a typical Japanese summer festival with food in Japan! This is the Fussa Tanabata Festival 2016. Check out the Japanese street food vendors and watch Japanese traditional dancing with us!

I grew up in California, and every summer I visited various Obon festivals in Orange County and LA. In the US, Japanese summer festivals are tied to Obon which is a Buddhist holiday honoring dead ancestors. Coming to Japan, I thought that summer festivals were tied to Obon, but that’s not the case. Japanese summer festivals are just basically a big street party involving the whole community. It’s not tied to any religion in particular. It’s interesting to see the original Japanese summer festival. My guess is that in the US, Japanese American community may have centered around Buddhist churches (at least in California)… so they replicated the Japanese summer festival at the churches. Its so interesting to compare the summer festival in Japan to Obon festival in the states.
