24 hours in ASO – “too much volcano” (阿蘇山)
Aso volcano, located in Kumamoto prefecture, is one of the most active volcanos in Japan. Ever since I heard the ‘A.S.O. too much volcano’ song by Abroad in Japan team, I wanted to visit it myself. I got an opportunity to spend 24 hours in the area and had an awesome time. Great hikes, views of volcanic rocks and gaseous emissions. In June 2024, there was a level 2 warning in effect due to increased volcanic gas emissions and therefore we weren’t allowed to go near the Nakadake crater. That did not affect my plans as there were lot of other stuff to do as well. Someday I’d love to come back and hike up to the Nakadake crater.
