Mt. Iwate is at Risk of Eruption, and Now Closed to Hikers

This was filmed on October 2nd, 2024 the day Mt. Iwate’s closure was announced. I’ve been working every day, so it took me a while to edit and publish this video…

I’m a full-time guide, mostly up in Tohoku (northeast Japan) but I also guide groups up Mt. Fuji in the pre and post season as well as lead normal tours in places like Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo when contracted.

If you’re interested in hiring me to guide you either on a hike or around town, send me an email through this channel or message me on Instagram or Twitter. Some additional info is available here: https://gonorthjapan.com/

  1. Well that's interesting news! Do you think this might affect the operation of the ski areas on the mountain's slopes?

  2. this the precise volcano upon which a had buried one billion dollars worth of diamonds near the summit. i was going to go get them and split the money with whoever guided me. but now i wont be able to i guess. darn. i guess i'll wait. ….. (i'm joking)

  3. Sooooo, is this the only volcano that you’re making or are you continuing to make a video/visit other volcanoes in Japan? If so can you make a volcano video of mt. Asamayama or Hakone? Please 😊

  4. Your storytelling and dedication to your content is so inspiring and impressive man! Brilliant channel man!

  5. I'm so glad that you've been able to film this beautiful mountain. You have so many good memories 😊. Bless the mountain, it will open its sacred gates again 🕊️🙏

  6. Around 6:12 you bring up a good point: are there particular hikes that suit casual hikers but still offer great sights/views? Maybe there's video potential there?

I'm sorry about Mt. Iwate. You said everything is temporary … but hopefully, the wait will be temporary, too.

  7. Hoping in the near future I can go on one of your tours! Thanks again telling me about the morioka festival that one time in May. I bought some sake and a sake set from your friend the next day

  8. Sorry for that. Really love your videos of Iwate… BUUUUT: I also love all your other videos. So let's stay positive and I can't wait to see all the other gems you can take us to and maybe even you don't know yet. Let's go, new horizons are waiting! <3

  9. Morioka was my favorite of my month long trip to japan!!! The view of mt. Iwate was so insane!!

  10. That is a real shame. Various trials I love have been closed over the years due to flooding, erosion or other dangers. I hope it reopens again soon and you find some alternative amazing spots in the meantime!

  11. I looked at on-line info. Alert Level 2 means hiking entry is "kisei" which I always thought meant "regulated" or "controlled". I've seen that word used for traffic regulation, for example. Not like Level 3, where entry is "kinshi", prohibited.

So are people actually staying away?

Is this one of these unspoken Japanese things where you're supposed to interpret this as a stay-out request?
Like the "go-enryo" construction which means literally something like "have misgivings" about doing something but is in fact a firm request not to do something?

  12. One other comment, steam ("phreatic") eruptions are really, really hard (impossible) to predict. the 2014 Ontake-san disaster was a steam eruption, as was the 2018 White Island (Whakaari) disaster in New Zealand. Which is precisely why all those people were killed in both cases. So I wonder what information the authorities are basing this on. I'd bet 50-1 that nothing will happen…

  13. It's beautiful how you transformed some bad news into an opportunity to create such a gorgeous video! I felt very sad for you when I heard the news I have to say and sad more generally too, as having watched all your videos and re-watched many featuring Mount Iwate when I was in need of a dose of beauty and peace, I've grown rather fond of the mountain despite never having visited. I certainly hope that the danger passes as soon as possible and that Mt. Iwate will soon be welcoming her devoted friends back onto her slopes sooner rather than later. In the meantime the videos you made on previous hikes will be there to enjoy.
