Makihatayama (巻機山), one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains (日本百名山), offers a rewarding hike with stunning 360-degree views.
We arrived at Sakurazakadai Parking Lot 3 (桜坂第3駐車場) around 6 am and found it almost full. There were empty spaces in Lot 1, which is where the trailhead is, a five-minute walk away.
The trail started through the Bunan forest, and the autumn foliage was already starting to show. It was lovely to see the green, brown, and red palette of the changing leaves. The wind was so strong that I could barely hear my bear bell. From station 4 to station 6, we could smell the strong scent of an animal or animal droppings — not sure which. Needless to say, we didn’t take a break there!
We arrived at the Makihatayama Shelter three and a half hours later. The shelter was very clean and had two bathrooms inside. We ate our onigiri there and left after 15 minutes to continue our journey to the peak.
We reached the Makihatayama peak about 30 minutes later. The view along the hike was breathtaking – layers of mountains, and thanks to the clear weather, we could even see Mount Naeba! We continued a bit further to see the smiley face, which was a wetland area with grass that looked like a 😃.
The descent took about three and a half hours. By the time we reached our car, most of the other cars were gone. On the way down, the wind was still strong but nothing compared to the ascent.
I highly recommend this hike. The view was beautiful and a full 360 degrees, and the autumn colors were a wonderful bonus. It’s easy to see why it’s a top 100 mountain.
I want to give a shout-out to the trail runners along the route. You really lifted my spirits!
日本の百名山の一つ、巻機山（まきはたやま）は、360度の絶景を望むことができる、やりがいのある登山コースです。
私たちは午前6時頃に桜坂第3駐車場に到着しましたが、ほぼ満車でした。登山口のある第1駐車場には空きがあり、そこから歩いて5分ほどで登山口に着きました。
ブナ林の中を進む登山道では、紅葉が始まっており、緑、茶色、赤色の葉の変化を楽しむことができました。風が非常に強く、熊鈴の音もほとんど聞こえませんでした。4合目から6合目にかけては、動物か動物の糞の強い臭いがしたので、休憩はせずに先を急ぎました。
3時間半ほど歩くと、巻機山避難小屋に到着しました。小屋はとてもきれいで、中にトイレが2つありました。そこで持参したおにぎりを食べ、15分ほど休憩した後、山頂を目指して出発しました。
山頂までは約30分で到着。登山道からの眺めは息を呑むほど美しく、幾重にも重なる山々が見え、晴天にも恵まれたため、苗場山まで見ることができました！さらに少し進むと、湿地帯に草が生えていて😃のように見える「スマイルマーク」も見ることができました。
下山には3時間半ほどかかりました。駐車場に戻った頃には、ほとんどの車がなくなっていました。下山の際も風は強かったですが、登りに比べればそれほどでもありませんでした。
巻機山は本当におすすめです。360度の素晴らしい景色に加え、紅葉も見ることができ、百名山に選ばれているのも納得です。
