The Rural Village That Helped Defeat Hitler: Regoufe, Portugal

Walking tour of Regoufe, a small rural village near Arouca, northern Portugal, with a surprising past tied to World War II. Discover how this remote village became a strategic hotspot due to its rich tungsten mines, supplying the Allies (Britain and the United States) with this critical war material. Tungsten, also called wolfram, was essential for making projectiles and penetrating ammunition. See the silent remnants of this mining era that still stand today.

  3. Miguel thank you for this forgotten history lesson, very well appreciated, but "genetically" there's no trace of any Visigoths from the Balkans in Portugal, should be more like "in the Visigoth era" instead of literal "Visigoths" in Portugal, historians like to place certain people under certain titles, Barbarians lived in every corner of the Roman empire not just in the Balkans and some how made their way into the extremities of western Europe and from paganism became Christians forgot their language and culture and started building churches.
People today like to imagine in ancient times people moved around as much as they do today which is a farse.

  4. The world will never know who would have won a football soccer match between the Allies and the Axis Powers at Regoufe’s “Tungsten Stadium”, but we know who lost the war.

  6. Bom dia! So much has been written about the El Camino de Santiago, from France to Spain. I would be very interested in seeing a series of your videos regarding the Portuguese Camino. I’ve seen in previous videos of yours where you’ve seen the “shell” symbol of the Camino path. It would make a long series but could be broken into smaller segments as needed and for convenience. Good luck on whatever you choose to do. We can’t wait to see it. 😊

  7. Olá Miguel para já… Um resto de um bom domingo… Excelente vídeo é muito o Miguel mostrar pequenas aldeias mesmo que não sejam turísticas! 10. Clean fresh air. So peaceful, and the sound of nature is amazing. I imagine there was no covid outbreaks except when the tourists invaded the bigger cities. My ancestors were from Gumaraes, further north. I can't wait to visit. I don't speak the language, only Spanish.

  11. In as much as Salazar's Dictatorship was bad for Portugal, there was a silver lining, the fascist regime kept Portugal neutral and out of WW2. As long as Portugal supplied Nazi Germany with the wolfram/tungsten it wanted, Portugal was safe. It was also ideal, another fascist neutral country, Spain, was in the way. Imagine if Hitler had turned all his attention West, never mind Russia, and sent his war machine to invade Spain and Portugal. From my Trás os Montes village house where I was born, even today, I can still see the scars on the landscape, of the wolfram mine operating there during WW2. It was Brittish run, incidently. Had Germany invaded and taken over the mine, I am sure my father, in his twenties, along with all the men of the village, would have been sent to the mine and worked to death. I wouldn't exist today. My village wouldn't exist today, most probably. Um video fabuloso, muito obrigado, fez-me pensar na casa, na aldeia, e num Portugal rural de grande valor histórico que está a desaparecer. Graça a essas paredes que testemunham do passado, do que éra Portugal, do Portugal onde eu nasci.

  13. Ouvir aqueles passarinhos e o barulho de água corrente foi extremamente relaxante! E o lugar é muito interessante, bem como sua história. Obrigada, Miguel!
Qual é a pronúncia correta do nome da Aldeia?
    Abraços e ótima semana!
