HOW TO GET TO HAKUBA
Getting to Hakuba from Tokyo is straightforward. You can take a direct bus from Shinjuku (Alpico) or from Narita/Haneda Airport (Nagano Snow Shuttle, available in winter).
For a faster option, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano, then transfer to the Alpico bus to Hakuba.
Once you arrive, your accommodation can pick you up—just be sure to inform them and book this service in advance (at least 3 days).
ADDITIONAL TIPS
1. Hakuba is a year-round destination, but during the green season (spring to autumn), it experiences fewer tourists. As a result, some facilities and services, including public transportation, may be limited. If you’re visiting during this time, renting a car is recommended.
2. In addition to the listed accommodations, Hakuba has numerous chalets ideal for large groups or families. These chalets offer excellent facilities, including kitchens. However, they may be located far from key attractions and may not be accessible by public transportation. If you are interested in staying at one, renting a car is highly recommended.
3. It is highly recommended to book a room with breakfast at Hakuba. This is due to the limited number of restaurants and convenience stores in the area, particularly in the morning. Consequently, the hotel’s breakfast is unarguably the best option available.
4. If you stay at a ryokan, and would like to get an authentic experience, always book a dinner with your accommodation (if available). Dinner is a highlight of every stay in a ryokan, and the chef will always use the best local ingredients, especially if it is a kaiseki dining. Some ryokans may even offer a meal upgrade for guests to try top-tier delicacies made from rare, expensive ingredients.
Suppose you book a kaiseki dinner. It is crucial to arrive at your ryokan shortly before the scheduled dinner time. If you are too late, the staff may not serve you the meal, even if you have already paid for it.
5. As in other places in Japan, you need to book breakfast or dinner with the accommodation in advance. Walk-ins are not guaranteed. I recommend booking the room with breakfast and dinner beforehand.
6. Based on my experience, rooms with futons are not recommended for the elderly or people with mobility issues. Always book rooms with western beds for them.
7. Some rooms at the ryokans do not have private bathrooms. You will need to bath or shower at the public bathroom. This may not be convenient for some. Thus, always check carefully before booking to ensure that your desired room has a private bathroom.
Our Criteria for the list:
– Available for booking on multiple platforms
– Located in Hakuba, Japan
– Prime Location (Close to the bus terminal or key attractions)
– Receive excellent review scores (at least 80%) on all booking platforms
– Sufficiently spacious for 2 guests.
– All rooms must be air-conditioned.
– Facilities must be sufficient for guests to stay with comfort.
– No cleanliness or service issues
– My personal experience with the accommodation (if any) must be positive.
