There are lots of things to do in Nagasaki, so you can easily spend longer there. However, we went on a day trip from Fukuoka on the Kamome shinkansen. First we walked from the station to Dejima Wharf, which is by the sea with places to try fresh fish rice bowls. From there, we walked through the seaside park to Chinatown, where we just missed the lantern festival by a few days. Much of the city is walkable, but for places that are further off, the tram is a cheap and easy way to get around. We took the tram to the Peace Park and Museum – not an easy visit but a very well-done museum and very thought-provoking. Next we took the tram to the Nagasaki Ropeway, to go up Mount Inasayama and see one of Japan’s top 3 night views. We got there just before sunset and waited in the cafe until it got dark to see the stunning view. Finally we had conveyor belt sushi, before taking the train back to Fukuoka.

So beautiful 😍
I love Nagasaki.
Nagasaki is a small city. But the small city has a lot of attractions. Nagasaki has mountains, sea and a port. As you mentioned, this environment is similar to Kobe and Hakodate. It's similar to these cities in having an exotic atmosphere too. The fresh seafood gourmet is also great.
I like Nagasaki best in Kyushu.
We spent 3 nights in Nagasaki last March and really enjoyed it. Personally, I dont like daytrips, as a find them stressful, and I like to wake up and go to bed in a place I visit. We stayed in the Dormy Inn just opposite from Chinatown, and enjoyed tasty authentic food there, in restaurant without any athmosphere at all. I totally agree with you Amy, that visiting places like the atom bomb museum is really horrible. But I think we must do that, and also share it, in the hope that it will never happen again. For me, what disgusted me most, is the way the USA "justified" to drop an atomic bomb over Nagaski !
P.S. The museum in Hiroshima is even worse in my opinion, and I was in tears there. However, the most horrible place I have visited is S21 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Men, women and children were tortured and killed there by the Khmer Rouge, for no reason. Inhumanity at its worst. I still have nightmares about it.
