Just 45 minutes from Tokyo by direct shinkansen, you’ll find the beautiful city of Atami 🤩 it’s the ideal gateway to exploring more of the incredible prefecture of Shizuoka! 🙌🏼
What to do:
🌸 visit the beautiful Atami Plum Grove – during January through February you’ll see the beautiful plum blossoms, but the garden can be visited all year round to see spring and summer blooms, and autumn leaves later in the year 🤩
⛩️ explore the stunning Kinomiya Shrine, home to a 2,000 year old camphor tree, plus a beautiful Inari shrine (recognisable by the tunnel of red gates). Don’t forget your goshuin!
🏡 visit Kiunkaku, a historic villa with beautiful gardens, located in the heart of the town
🖼️ stop by the Atami Museum of Art for both art inside and beautiful view outside
🏰 visit Atami Castle and take the ropeway up (sadly we didn’t have time to do this 😭)
🌊 stroll along the seafront promenade and enjoy the beautiful views

🛌 for a budget option, stay at Prince Smart Inn – it’s right by the station! This is where we stayed 🥰 it’s comfy and did the job! 💴 £71 per night 💴
🛌 a mid-range option is Rakuten STAY Atami, which was our original plan but it sold out 😂 💴 £150 per night 💴
🛌 for a bit of a splurge, stay at Pearl Star Hotel right in the town centre 🥰 💴 £308 per night 💴

🥞 Golden Road Atami for a cute spot for tea, coffee, sandwiches and pancakes
🍮 Atami Pudding Cafe for, you guessed it, Atami pudding 😅
🍜 らぁめん ぎょうざ 居酒屋御冨久路 for tasty ramen 😋
🥟 Gomihatchin Lusca Atami 五味八珍 ラスカ熱海店 for tasty dumplings and ramen, conveniently located right in the station – perfect if you’re arriving late from Tokyo and need a quick and simple dinner!
🚆 Tokyo – Atami takes just 48 minutes by Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, or 1h44 on the Ueno-Tokyo Line (if you want to save money!)
🌸 bonus: make sure to take a day trip to Kawazu if you visit during February for early cherry blossoms!
🚊 other day trips to consider include Mishima, Itō, Izu and the Jōgasaki Coast 🌊
