Shirakami Mountains, a World Natural Heritage Site

Shirakami-Sanchi is the general name for a vast mountain range spanning approximately 130,000 hectares in the northwestern part of Akita Prefecture and the southwestern part of Aomori Prefecture.
One of the world’s largest primeval beech forests, virtually untouched by human activity, is distributed here, and a valuable ecosystem is maintained within it, with a wide variety of plants and animals living and growing naturally. The area was registered as a World Heritage Site (natural heritage) in December 1993.
