Could I skate the Shimanami Kaido In Japan at 40 years old?

The Shimanami Kaido route between Onomichi, Hiroshima and Imabari, Ehime is a popular cycling route across the Inland Sea of Japan (Setonaikai) that runs alongside the expressway that traverses the sea via 7 spectacular high level suspension and cable stayed bridges.

But I had other ideas, I wanted to skate across it on my skateboard. A challenge for most people, but at 40 years old at the time, the distance and uphill nature of getting up on to the bridges was something I dreamed of tackling.

In March 2023, I took up the challenge by setting out around western Japan in my mini van for a month, living the so-called van life by sleeping in my van as I travelled from my home in Mie Prefecture, all the way down to Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu.

This video covers the lead up and actual crossing of Shimanamikaidou route section of the month long trip.

On a personal note; this is a video I have really enjoyed making, as it really connects with my experience here in Japan. And I was being completely honest at the end when I describe the feelings I have for the overall experience of skating the route.
