岩見沢市の史跡 Iwamizawa City Historic Sites

岩見沢の地名の由来は開拓当時、開拓者たちがここを流れる幾春別川の川辺に休憩所を設け、ここで浴(ゆあみ）をして疲れを癒していたことから「浴澤(ゆあみさわ)」と呼ばれる様になり、それが転化して「岩見沢」となった説が有力となっている。北海道の都市の中でアイヌ語由来ではなく和名由来となっているのは珍しい。明治17年(1884年)から入植が始まり翌明治18年にかけてまず山口県、鳥取県ほか10県から開拓士族277戸が入植している。歌人石川啄木の憧れの女性であった橘智恵は岩見沢にあった北村農牧場の牧場主に嫁いでいった。明治43年(1910年)に出版された啄木の処女歌集「一握の砂」を智恵に贈ったが、そこに収められていた「忘れがたき人々」で智恵のことが歌われている。国兼家住宅は出羽国鶴岡(山形県)出身で北海製材雑穀株式会社を創業した竹野繁次郎氏が大正6年(1917年)に自邸として建てたもので基本は和風の伝統建築様式であるが、雪国の生活にも適応している。材木商らしく秋田産の杉やヒノキを使用していて、造作もしっかりしている。国鉄万字線は万字炭鉱(岩見沢市栗沢 1905年創業、1976年閉山)から産出される石炭を積み出すために大正3年(1914年)に室蘭本線と結ぶ全線が開業し、沿線の開発を促進し石炭輸送で大いに活況を呈する事となった。しかし他の炭鉱同様エネルギー革命の中、炭鉱閉山に伴い、昭和60年(1985年)に廃止されている。
Between 1884 and 1885, 277 samurai families from Yamaguchi and Tottori settled in Iwamizawa. A woman whom the Japanese poet Ishikawa Takuboku admired married a ranch owner in Iwamizawa. Ishikawa Takuboku wrote about the woman in his first published collection of poems. The Kunikane family residence was built in 1917 by lumber merchant Takeno Shigejiro. It is sturdy and made of cedar and cypress cut in Akita Prefecture, and is still standing today after more than 100 years. The Manji Railway opened in 1914 to transport coal produced in the coal mines, and contributed to the development of the area along the line. It was discontinued in 1985 due to the successive closures of coal mines.
