GEOGRAPHY

Lake Towada (十和田湖) is a scenic crater lake located on the border of Aomori and Akita Prefectures in northern Japan. It is the largest caldera lake on Honshu, the main island of Japan,
formed from volcanic activity approximately 200,000 years ago. The lake is situated at an elevation of about 400 meters above sea level. It has a surface area of about 61 square kilometers and reaches a maximum depth of around 327 meters. Two peninsulas jut into the lake, creating picturesque inlets and providing diverse landscapes for exploration.

SURROUNDING NATURE

The lake is surrounded by lush forests, providing stunning views throughout the year. The area is particularly famous for its autumn foliage, attracting many visitors during the fall season.

The picturesque Oirase Gorge features a river flowing from Lake Towada, lined with beautiful waterfalls and lush greenery. It is a popular destination for hiking and nature walks.

Tsutanuma Swamp is known for its stunning autumn colors. This swamp area near Lake Towada is another beautiful spot for nature lovers.

The famous bronze statue “Statue of Otome no Zo (Maidens Statue)” by the sculptor Kotaro Takamura is a symbol of the lake and a popular photo spot.

Towada Shrine, located on the lake’s shore, is dedicated to the deity of Lake Towada and is a popular spot for visitors seeking tranquility and spiritual experience.

ACCESS

Lake Towada is accessible by bus from Aomori City, Hachinohe, and other nearby cities. The journey provides scenic views of the countryside and forests.
