Miyajima is a perfect day trip from Hiroshima, reached by a short train journey to Miyajimaguchi, followed by a 10 minute ferry across to Miyajima (also known as Itsukushima).
Here’s how to spend your day trip on Miyajima!
1️⃣ Visit Senjokaku Pavilion and see the Five-Story Pagoda
Senjokaku Pavilion’s name means ‘1,000 tatami mats’, which tells you the size of this 16th century hall! Enjoy the views over the island from here.
2️⃣ Visit Itsukushima Shrine ⛩️
See the iconic ‘floating’ torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine and explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make sure to check the tide forecast before visiting if you specifically want to see the shrine and gate at high or low tide!
3️⃣ Explore the streets and spot some deer 🦌
Explore the winding streets of Miyajima and spot deer exploring as well. Take the opportunity to purchase a cute deer magnet too!
4️⃣ Have lunch at Miyajima Base
This small restaurant offers simple but delicious fare – karaage (fried chicken), beef curry and rice. It’s all gluten free and milk free too!
5️⃣ Explore Momijidani Park 🍂
Momijidani Park is particularly popular in the autumn thanks to the beautiful red and orange colours during this season. Explore and find shrines, bridges, waterfalls, koi ponds and more.
6️⃣ Take the Miyajima Ropeway up Mount Misen to Shishiiwa Observatory 🚡
Take the cable car up Mount Misen, Miyajima’s highest mountain. Enjoy spectacular views over the Seto Inland Sea and – if you’re feeling fit – hike down! There are also a variety of hiking trails from the upper ropeway station to get to the peak and other areas.
7️⃣ Enjoy momiji manjū
A well deserved treat at the end of the day! This sweet treat is shaped like a Japanese maple leaf 🍁 and traditionally filled with red bean paste, but head to Momijido Main Store for a variety of flavours! My favourite was custard filled 😋
