After an eight-hour journey from Hakodate we stayed overnight in the city of Sendai. Sendai is a city in Tohoku region northeast of Tokyo. We arrived in Sendai late afternoon and we wasted no time in exploring the city. We went inside the train station and had ‘gyutan’ for dinner. Gyutan is a local specialty made from grilled beef tongue. It was packed with flavour but a bit pricey.

From Sendai, our next destination was Yudanaka in Nagano. Yudanaka is a small town nestled in Nagano prefecture, renowned for its hot springs and the Snow Monkey Park. For our accommodation we stayed at Shimaya which is a ryokan-style inn located just a short walk from the train station.

Upon arriving at the Snow Monkey Park we were greeted by a seren and natural environment. Tall trees lined up the slightly slippery path. The park is a sanctuary for the Japanese macaques. It was an incredible experience to watch these playful creatures as they soaked in the hot spring. We highly recommend this travel itinerary to anyone looking to explore Japan’s unique wildlife.

  1. Due to a limited time we only stayed in Sendai overnight. We reckon it is a city worth exploring further. The visit to the Snow Monkey Park was on our to do list. It was an incredible experience to watch the Japanese Macaques doing their playful antics. 😀
