In today’s episode, we will visit the beautiful city of Otaru Our journey starts right here in Sapporo Bus Station This is also the location where Sapporo Clock Tower can be found for express buses, so you can visit the clock tower right after getting off the bus. The city is easily accessible from Sapporo, Hokkaido’s capital, with frequent bus services connecting the two in just under an hour Express buses run every 10 to 20 minutes, so there is not much waiting time before boarding There are many ways to get from Sapporo to Otaru. The JR, car, and bus transportation methods introduced here all have their merits and demerits, so you should choose the one that best suits your needs. In this journey, we will use express bus. Let’s on board now… Payment can be made via IC Card or using ticket and coins. One way: 610 yen Round Trip: 1,140 yen If you have larger bills, you can use the machine next the bus driver to change them to smaller denomination There are several bus stops along the way. For those who find it a bit tedious to think about transportation, we recommend taking a sightseeing cab so that you can concentrate on sightseeing without having to think about anything else. But if you are on a budget, buses can be an alternative mode of transport. All bus fares and bus stops can be seen in front as displayed on the screen next to the driver Otaru is a such a popular place in Japan. Visiting Otaru can be quite confusing to some travellers But with the help of Google Maps for navigation and Google Translate apps, visiting Otaru becomes accessible Nestled along the western coast of Hokkaido, Otaru is a picturesque port city that exudes charm and history. From Otaru, visitors can also embark on day trips to nearby attractions such as the scenic Shakotan Peninsula, known for its dramatic cliffs and clear blue waters, or the quaint town of Yoichi, famous for its Nikka Whisky Distillery. Renowned for its stunning canal, well-preserved architecture, and delightful seafood, Otaru is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and culinary delights Some of the well-known spots in Otaru are Otaru Canal, Sakaimachi Street, Otaru Glass Studio, Nishin Goten (Herring Mansion) Tenguyama Ropeway, Otaru Aquarium, Kitaichi Glass Traveling to Otaru by bus from Sapporo provides an opportunity to see more of Hokkaido’s scenic landscapes The journey takes you through beautiful countryside, offering glimpses of rural life, rolling hills, and coastal vistas. The slower pace compared to the train allows travelers to appreciate the changing scenery and perhaps discover hidden gems along the way. There are actually bus Options from Sapporo to Otaru, each offering comfort and convenience. Major bus companies such as Hokkaido Chuo Bus and JR Hokkaido Bus provide frequent and reliable services. You can take Hokkaido Chuo Bus. Route is Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. Duration: Approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Frequency: Buses depart every 30 minutes during peak times Comfort: Equipped with comfortable seating, air conditioning, and large windows for scenic views Or you can take the JR Hokkaido Bus. Duration: Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Frequency: Regular departures throughout the day. Amenities: Similar comfort and amenities to Hokkaido Chuo Bus For an added treat, some buses offer free Wi-Fi and power outlets, allowing you to stay connected or charge your devices during the journey.
