Mojiko is geographically located very close to Fukuoka, it technically isn’t part of Fukuoka prefecture. It’s situated within Kitakyushu City, which is another major city in Kyushu Island.
However, Mojiko is a popular day trip destination from Fukuoka due to its proximity and easy access by train. It’s known for its beautiful waterfront area, Moji Retro, which features Western-style architecture from the Meiji and Taisho periods (late 19th to early 20th century).
From Hakata Station in Fukuoka, you can take the Limited Express Sonic or Kirameki train to Kokura Station. Then, transfer to the JR Kagoshima Line and get off at Mojiko Station. The total travel time is around 55 minutes.
Explore Moji Retro: Stroll along the waterfront and admire the historic buildings. Some notable structures include the former Moji Customs Office, now a museum and cafe, and the red-brick warehouses that have been converted into shops and restaurants.
