I spent a fun day exploring Nagasaki Dutch Slope, a section of the city known for its Western-style buildings. I strolled through the European-style architecture, visited Oura Church and Glover Garden, and then hiked up Mount Nabekanmuri.

[Music] this area is known as the Dutch slope right here it’s a beautiful area in nagazaki and uh I am on my mission today to explore this section of nagazaki nagazaki is a really huge City and this is the western style house number 13 hiashi yamati so let’s take a look at it it’s a western style building because in 1859 the foreign trade was uh I mean Japan was open to the foreign trade in 1859 in nagazaki Port and in the preceding two centuries only Dutch people were allowed to to trade here in Japan and that’s why they call it the Dutch slope because only the only westerns westerners who were allowed to stay in Japan to trade to do foreign trades were only uh were from uh Holland the Netherlands I think it’s uh free to go inside I think but we will keep going actually uh the house is open open to the public and it’s a very very uh famous uh historic house so this is one of the uh places that you might consider visiting if you happen to visit uh nagazaki and my hotel is uh somewhere in this area not that far from from here about uh I would say 2minute walk very very close and I captured some of the hotel footage in my previous uh video of nagazaki in case you want to check it out so let’s continue the tour of this section of the city there is a be beautiful China Town as well not that far from here and we will keep uh going up because I see more western style buildings it’s a very nice area by the way nagazaki overall is uh now it’s officially my second favorite uh City in uh Japan so I visited uh a lot of major cities in Japan and the first uh my favorite my first favorite major city is sapuro in um in Hokkaido sapuro is the capital of uh Hokkaido Island and my second favorite city in Japan now is nagazaki not uh Osaka not Tokyo not yukama and not even not even Kyoto Co coyot is not even in my uh three favorite cities in uh in Japan you might wonder why but uh but I really liked the sapuro and nagazaki and I’m falling in love in those uh beautiful cities and I’m not quite sure what the uh what this house is uh I think they have some kind of uh information here it says the western style house number 12 hi shamati okay they go by then by numbers so western style house I guess the other one that I I was looking at maybe that was number 13 I’m not sure but they go by numbers but the whole area is known as the Dutch area I see the US flag right here but unfortunately everything is in the Japanese and it’s widely is open to the public so far nobody asked me to buy a [Music] ticket the hotel that I am staying at is called monay monay Hotel let’s keep uh going you might ask me then what is my third favorite city in Japan since I already mentioned the first two cities that I like so the third one is Hiroshima that’s my third uh favorite uh city is this open yeah I think I think it’s open I hope I’m not uh trespassing but the door I guess it’s uh I guess it’s open very nice interesting to wander through some buildings in Japan that look non-japanese non Japanese style and it goes up there I’m not sure where it’s going to take me maybe it’s a museum we will find out looks like I’m the only one [Music] here what is this yeah it’s closed but I actually wanted to to check out that building because it looks uh it looks nice to [Music] me see yesterday uh I went to a a mountain up to the mountain right there it’s very very nice uh I got a very nice view of the uh of the city at night I had a very long video of the other section of uh nagazaki where they drew where the atomic uh bomb was dropped in uh in that section of Nagasaki where they have the peace Park um uh there the Memorial Hall and the nagazaki museum which I really highly recommend you visit the museum if you want to learn the uh the historic uh facts of uh the uh Atomic bombing back in August on August 9th 1945 at 11:02 a.m. I covered that in my previous video you can check it out but for now let’s uh let’s continue our uh tour of this of this beautiful Dutch District looks like there is a trail that goes up there are actually two Trails I’m not quite sure which one I should take this shows that this is private university grounds maybe uh not open to the public we will go this way you know when you have too many options to to visit life gets a little bit complicated Chinatown is that way the former Chinese settlement is that way but there is also beautiful interesting areas that way about 1 km away there is a beautiful garden somewhere there but that is about uh a kilometer away from where I am I was there earlier this morning I went to McDonald’s to have a breakfast but I had some uh issue with my esm card they cut off my uh data plan for some reason but it turned out that it’s not uh actually uh the uh the data plan company fault it’s it’s my phone uh problem this some of the settings got messed up so I had to go back to the hotel to uh to get my stuff in order and fix the uh fix the issue it took me about 45 minutes to figure out what’s what the heck is going on with my phone but I figured it out and I solved the uh the problem see uh I’m supposed to go that way to to visit the uh the chinat toown that China toown is also very beautiful I went there uh two days ago but I did not uh film it because I don’t film every day and I don’t tour every day so that was a day of my rest day and I walked there on my way to a restaurant and I really liked it so I’m not sure if if I’m already here 7 it says 700 M I’m not that far from that Glover Garden so I guess I I guess I’m going to continue my tour this way see this is another western style building you see uh traditional buildings in the heay yamati I think the neighborhood is called heay yamati if I’m not mistaken but uh this is actually uh a cafe you see it doesn’t look like uh I am in Japan it looks like uh I am in Europe so European style buildings it’s a museum yeah it’s a museum but I am not uh I’m not interested in actually going inside the uh the house we will continue to the to the grover Garden it’s an open uh open air museum uh that area we will go check it out you see along the way I see so many interesting places and this looks like it’s a temple it is actually a temple right there but I have no idea what the name of this place is it will be nice if they have uh [Music] a sign at least telling me what’s the name I can find out uh from uh from Google Maps later when I process the video I will figure out uh What uh what Temple this is and this is a very narrow [Music] path see now I am going using a different uh with kicha using a different uh path that does not uh take me to the Garden but it’s always good to at least check her out there is a construction right there [Music] what’s the name what’s the name of that Temple you forgot Jain oh okay yeah temp okay yeah Temple yeah yeah okay I caught at least the name of the of the temple and now where is the uh Glover Sky Road okay I hope I am going uh toward the right uh Direction I hope so but it’s quite a very nice quite area [Music] you see what I like about nagazaki is that they have these Maps welcome to nagazaki foreign settlement they have these uh maps and uh the areas we were where we were it was this this one I think but we did not see this uh church we will go and check it out and the uh actually there are two areas hiashi yamati area and Minami yamati area wow beautiful Canal here is this a real Canal or manmade I have no idea but Google Map wants me to go this way which also looks uh nice uh it has a feeling of a small town mountaineous Town up there there is also a place called The Thea or something like that where only uh Portuguese people were allowed to to stay in that particular area and I am going to go visit it and then after the Portuguese left the Dutch people uh came in and replaced them see the garden goes uh that way but there is also beautiful the church is uh 250 M since it’s only 250 M it’s not that far from here we will go and explore it so I’m staying in nagazaki for five uh five days and in case you want to visit nagazaki in the future I can tell you that there are two sections of the city the uh this is nagazaki considered downtown nagazaki and the other section is where the the atomic bomb exploring and that is a little bit far you cannot walk there you will need to take a the street car or a bus okay where is that church I do see a temple up ahead but not a church yeah she is uh she is also filming or maybe she is talking on the phone I have no idea this is a beautiful Shrine right there I can see the church Tower there yeah as usual they don’t have the name of the [Music] temple I do see a cemetery here it’s really nice when you tour a place without the crowd of the uh tourists you know and that’s one of the reasons why I hate the big measure over rated uh cities such as Osaka and Tokyo you go there and it’s very very crowded super crowded but once you go to off the beaten path places that people don’t consider going then is totally different uh case and nagazaki is one of them nagazaki is a huge City it’s not uh of the beaten path cities but the problem is for foreign Travelers they don’t make the attempts to to to visit nagazaki because like I said in the previous my previous uh video the shansen train there is there is no Shen Canon train direct train that takes you all the way to nagazaki you will have to transfer at least twice and it’s very far it’s not within reach from Hiroshima and uh Hiroshima and Osaka is very far so if you if you make all the efforts to visit nagazaki you need at least I would say three nights to stay three nights oh boy now I see the the crowd wow beautiful area here you see I’m not going to call that crowd not really big crowd this is only school kids we will go up there later but first I need to check what’s going on right there yeah it takes you to the Bay Area to nagazaki Port here we go that is the church that I’m trying to to reach but I really like that area too that building the whole uh area has a western style western style buildings and the church is one of them arato uh free or pay you get a ticket yes 1,000 1,000 to in enter the museum the museum what about only from outside just walk outside this are okay just just here free but to go up 1,000 okay thank you okay 1,000 yen to go inside the church I’m not quite sure if I I need to pay that much just to go inside the church it seems to be a little bit uh expensive just to uh to go inside the building for 1,000 yen maybe I can if I have time I will go back I will go back and check it out and let’s see where that uh sign will take me to okay see now I am exploring randomly by the way I the initial plan was to visit the Chinatown not this place and here we go Glover Garden this one definitely I will pay the fee to get in because it’s very beautiful even if it’s 2,000 Yen no problem I will pay it and then for that church I’m going to pull up uh Google and take a look at the pictures from Google and see if something is interesting and it’s worth uh 1,000 yen then I will do it and here we go Glover Glover Garden you see 620 yen to go to that uh Garden which is cheaper than going inside the church wow look at the view right here view of nagazaki but yesterday I got very very nice view at night from uh up the mountain so far I only see actually I do see two foreign Travelers right there actually no they are maybe they are Japanese and here is the map right there we’ll go buy the ticket [Music] now all right I got the ticket and they give you a map right there it has the uh some buildings of the uh the foreign residents who used to to live in this [Music] area wow this is the lower section of the of the garden I did not immediately take the the elevator to go up but I’m quite sure upstairs is also beautiful since most people go [Music] there yeah definitely it’s worth it to pay 620 yen to enter uh the [Music] garden but I’m not quite sure if these houses are replica or the original ones [Music] [Music] [Music] look at that bridge I’m not sure if you can see it or not it looks like the Golden Bridge in San Francisco but I got a nice view of it from the uh from the famous uh viewing platform up on the mountain I forgot the name of that mountain is very famous spot to take a photo there and it’s actually one of the three best uh views at night in uh Japan you can Google it to fact check that former Ranger house should we go inside and check her out we’ll just take a look quick look yeah it’s uh it’s kind of a museum maybe this is is one of the places that you might uh consider staying the spending the whole day exploring this uh this place because it’s huge and if I just keep going I see more and more beautiful uh houses former alt house former Steel [Music] Academy yeah I think they are not replicas by the way they are actually the original ones you reminds me of the historic village of Hokkaido it has some kind of uh same setup where they have uh historic buildings as well over there but they don’t allow you to go up here yeah it’s pretty much uh it’s like a museum if you want to read then definitely uh that will take you that will take you a lot of time see what a beautiful rest area here you see beautiful the whole place is to myself maybe this is uh What uh a cafeteria doesn’t look like a cafeteria but it will be nice if they have a cafe here so you can bring coffee and sit there in front of that beautiful view and they don’t allow food and drinks inside the the garden maybe they do have a a cafeteria somewhere there see they actually do have uh small coffee shop right there you can sit there you relax now it’s time to take the uh the escalator to go up and see what they offer up there [Music] this seems to be the main area yeah the upper level definitely has a nice view right there [Music] [Music] some people are always curious to find out what camera I’m using because it’s covered by wind Slayer to block the wind and they don’t know what camera it is they see that it’s very small and it doesn’t look uh like a regular camera because of the uh the wind protection that is that I use that’s why sometimes they they want what the heck am I using to film when they see me walk and talk they allow you to go up to the balcony let’s go nice view [Music] K yeah they have like a an audio guide that I can grab but I’m not interested in that I’ll just keep uh wandering through this beautiful garden see this building that I was in is called former Mitsubishi sh yard number two dog house right there the one that I just entered so now I’m going to exit and I’m going to go to the to Chinatown I’m not quite sure where the uh the the sign shows I have many signs here to look at like I said when you have too many options you don’t know which area you should visit and which area you need to skip but I kind of like this uh view right here I’m not quite sure where that elevator will take me to my guess is going to take you all the way to the bottom as opposed to taking the uh the escalator nice view you see yesterday actually I can come back here tonight to capture the the night view of this particular spot but yesterday I was right there you see right there all the way on the top but that is kind of a little bit expensive to go up the rway to take you all the way up and one way is about 750 and then U both ways you pay like around 1,200 Yen and that does not include the bus to get you there to the rway station it says 400 m so I’m using Google translate and it says uh viewing Observatory deck or something like that over there 400 m since I am already here let’s go check it out because there is no shortage of uh lockout uh viewing platforms because it’s a lot of uh uphill uh hikes uh hiking trails in this beautiful city 400 m doesn’t sound that long but when you go up it feels like it’s actually three times 400 m 1,200 M you look at the the bridge looks like the Golden Bridge in San Francisco California you see is called Mount naban namuri observation platform and I am the only tourist right now the whole neighbor neighborhood is to myself isn’t that beautiful wow beautiful small Japanese style buildings you see what helped uh nagazaki reduced the impact of the blast of the atomic bomb is because they have so many mountains that actually helped Shield the the uh the city from the blast of the atomic bombs the damage was not as severe as the one in hoshima the one in hoshima was horrible but also in nagazaki too if you visit the museum see the museum where the the the hyper center of the atomic uh bomb is right there in that direction right there almost 74,000 people died and about 73,000 people got injured as well and the whole population at the time was 240,000 people so almost more than half the population got uh died or injured and you look now I am in the middle of nowhere now and this is what scares me now when I find myself in a big forest such as this one cuz I don’t know what I’m going to come across hopefully I don’t come across any aggressive animal such as bear or aggressive monkey [Music] and you look there is a shrine right there yesterday I visited a shrine where it’s a toi gate actually survived uh the the atomic bomb the to gate is still standing even to this day it with stod the the atomic bomb and it was only about 500 M 800 M from the hyper Center I’m almost there look behind me isn’t that beautiful staircase nice view just me me and the birds and no one else it says 100 m but like I said it’s it feels like a it feels like 2 kilm when you go up uphill all right as the saying goes light at the end of the tunnel and I do hear people up there maybe they got there by car I see a parking lot there no wonder why I don’t see anybody hiking with me because local people usually Drive I I guess and the tourist tourist people have limited time they use that time to go visit the the uh the most popular places in in Nagasaki which I already covered in my last video so let’s find out what kind of view we will come across but I like what I see so far it gives you a nice nice view of the bridge right there but I don’t think I will uh come visit this one at night because the like you saw the hiking trail is a little bit scary and I don’t have the gut to uh to hike at night in this area unless if they have some kind of uh roadway or bus to take you all the way up there up here or if you drive but I don’t like to drive in Japan because they drive on the left side of the road which is not uh I’m not accustomed to that uh system and also they have so many tall roads so it’s actually more economical makes sense to uh to buy the shenen U tickets to move around from one city to the next and uh and with in the city you can use the bus system and the the subway and the tram and the street cars so they have no shortage of uh of Transportation options you will have a big Buffet of options so to speak but uh some region some section of the city like this one it will make sense actually if you have a car it will be the the icing on the cake because you will have the flexibility to come here at night because like I said they don’t offer uh a public transportation option to to get here but uh you can see there is another trailing I mean uh hiking trail goes that way but I don’t have the energy to go there I will use that uh to find my way to the to what uh Chinatown and a Chinese settlement we will go explore that area but to get there is going to take me at least an hour to get there I will use that time to cool down the camera because it’s very hot now camera is already overheating and also I will drink a lot of water and snacks to get uh more energy for filming we will get there see on my way down I see this view it’s a beautiful view very nice view right here on my way down let’s take a look and I think this is the historic uh church but I am going toward it from the other side it’s a very nice Trail right there you see behind me and that’s not the usual trail that most people use so this uh church is dedicated to the the memory of the 26 uh Christians who were executed in the city back in 19 actually 1597 1597 26 Christians were executed in n nagazaki and I think that’s the one that they charge uh 100 uh no 1,000 1,000 uh yen to go inside but I can capture some of it from here of the the fence because I heard that uh they don’t allow photos and cameras inside so it doesn’t make sense to pay to pay 1,000 yen and then they tell me do not film [Music] [Music]
