One cold, rainy day in Fukui, I headed down to vibrant Osaka for a bucket list experience. Train travel in Japan through countryside Japan lead to the bustling city.

Inside the arena, the atmosphere was electric. The rhythmic chants of the gyoji (referees) calling out the wrestlers’ names echoed through the hall. The massive dohyo (sumo ring) sat center stage, a ring of packed sand surrounded by straw bales.

As the lower-ranked wrestlers took the dohyo, I marveled at their sheer size and power. Even the lower divisions boasted men who dwarfed the average person. The pre-match rituals were fascinating to watch – the wrestlers stamping their feet to purify the ring, the elaborate salt-throwing ceremony.

Then came the main event – the arrival of the top-ranked wrestlers. The crowd erupted in cheers as the yokozuna (grand champion) and his rivals swaggered towards the ring, their faces stoic and focused.

Beyond the action on the dohyo, I was captivated by the cultural richness of the experience. The smell of incense wafted through the air, and vendors outside the arena sold traditional Japanese snacks. It felt like stepping back in time, a glimpse into the ancient world of sumo wrestling.

By the end of the day, I was exhausted but exhilarated. My trip to the Osaka sumo tournament was an unforgettable experience, a window into Japanese culture and a display of raw athletic power unlike anything I’d ever seen before.

[Music] hey oh massive thigh [Music] today I’ll be going to a Sumo match in Osaka I’m super excited Sumo is Japan’s national sport so it is a sport dating back over a thousand years I am currently halfway there and I still have like 2 hours to go and the Sumo matches start from 10: to 6:00 so I’m not late but I will be seeing the popular sports which usually play towards the end of the H day so I’m super excited super stoked because I’ve always seen this on you your TV with people in the sumo suit so now I get to actually see this very important and revered sport in Japanese culture [Music] I tell you that this place is packed it is packed and I just saw aumo wrestler on the train they’re not allowed to drive so they obviously have to take public transport am just a station away from the um Arena so I’m super excited there’s no vibe you know you know when you go to major events there’s usually a Vibe on your way there but here there isn’t much and also um it’s it’s raining outside so maybe that’s why so I’m underground and I’m trying to get to The Venue let’s go there I see the name I see the name I see the name but where is the arena idon Arena that’s where I’m supposed to be going but I don’t know where the arena is so I’m just going to go that way is a sport that has been played for religious purposes it was to appease the god mods for a good harvest um but right now it’s being paid for entertainment obviously but that is not to be taken like gosh I finally found it oh my gosh I see the flags this is where we’re going this is what I’ve been looking forward to oh my God I found it I made it I’m so so much assle get tickets to this place I used fjet which is essentially the alts from fug City they have an organization that you know organizes uh events supports alts that sort of a thing so they are the ones who got us the ticket and it costs me around 6,600 Yen for a sitting ticket so is probably the cheapest ticket advise you use a tour guide if you want to come here because tickets get sold out very easily this is a very popular sport and it’s actual professionals that spend their lives living at these staples throughout their careers just for this very few minutes of competition asumo match usually rusts around a few minutes for [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I was talking to a he so the T is split into two on the first half we have the Junior raceless and the second half we have the high ranking raceless what you see them doing here is their version of the haaka so what the Pacific Ocean people do before a match so it’s part of the tradition of sumo you can actually see the muscles off of these guys legs even though they are this big what must train like insanely to be this big and so get to see especially the mus hey [Applause] hey he never get oh each round starts when both Fighters have their arms touching the floor very a very very intense so you need to just watch out as an oppent you need to watch out for the other guy because he can just touch down and just start take you come straight F [Applause] oh hey hey hey oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I [Music] [Applause] You by to the camera B by to the camera [Music] there’s no replay R there’s no bar you see it once so that it’s over [Laughter] so how do you win a match in Sumo essentially if any part of your body besides the souls of your feet touch the ground then you are out like so or if you step out of the circular ring then you are also out yeah they call it stable they P so they live there and eat there and kill there every day I don’t think they did marriage up until maybe after they finish [Music] the [Music] guys I don’t know I can’t tell oh my go there a massive what oh he’s going for the Masashi hey hey hey look at these guys have got massive thighs these guys are deadlifting from sunrise to sunset I tell you what it’s insane i i i aspire to have those th too because Tashi Tami [Music] Tashi okay okay he’s lost eight and one five okay shine and then he’s fighting against somebody that’s lost 10 and only won three shouldn’t be hard a hard competition really there’s no competition at all I could even go there and find Tashi and beat his ass not Tami no one supp [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] fun fact about Sumo Wrestlers number one they are not allowed to drive number two they live work and eat at their Staples all throughout their career so they live together number three they need to grow their hair so they can do the traditional hairstyle so their hair is long enough for a ponytail that they tie into a bun number four they are not allowed to wear anything but traditional clothing out in the public eye so they need to wear a kimono and or a Yukata I mean besides if they’re in the rooming then they’re just wearing this [Applause] favorite fan favorite who is it show yourself we have Ura and hiri I don’t know who the fan favorite is but the room is electric everybody is in High Spirits who are we sharing for Ura or homi who’s the underdog who is the fan favorite let me listen I be that guy in the this is important so many adverts but those are this will be the first time something happens in 110 years if the guy on the left wins the guy on the left tji if he wins this will be the first time something happens in 110 years 13 matches he’s won 12 s to one he’s won 12 and lost one maybe it’ll be his I can save it in history I [Music] can this is a very important match all the marketing the whole marketing team is out what okay this is a highly anticipated match the guy on the left has won 12 matches and lost one and the guy on the right has won eight and lost five so obviously the fan favorite is takeru Fuji let’s see if he’s going to get his 13th [Music] win fui Okay g [Music] Zoom bu I must not miss that mat I feel like we need to watch that match I’ll explain okay let’s [Laughter] watch okay tempers are high now BR the crowd is he’s the lowest he’s the lowest ranking person in the whole yeah Underdog basically Underdog and he’s he’s only lost one game so if he wins this match he’s going to join here and he’s going to be the highest from the lowest to the highest so he is the underdog in in the high ranking wresters rakhi so if he wins this one he’s going to go up there and be with the names of the names of sumo so let’s see definitely a fan favorite and duck coming from the bottom everybody get a [Music] chance let see the crowd is quiet and you can just hear people shouting no on site hey okay oh oh snap I guess not today yo not today not today not today not today not today he’s limping a bit but it happens I guess they paid for a time what they are the fights of the day well not of the day but it’s a very important very important did she say more this game is so important what hot stuff I okay that’s interesting oh and the tea the O the green tea you see spons say wow we you know what we did not pay for the premium for this one this is the free the free version this is the free version clearly cuz we have so many sponsorships or advs we didn’t pay what what are we guys going with are you going in takao or taka or kirishima which one is Tak the one on the on the left takio is on the right kirishima is on the left look the one on the left I’m with I’m with who are you with who are you with on the right on the right who are you with who are you with I think I’m with the guy on the right on the right who are you with right okay let’s see who I’m want the one on the LIF I think the the one on the lift is doing too much okay let’s see he’s doing too much he needs to calm down I quiet hio [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the struggle in Japan sorting out trash after the event we had to carry our own trash bag this is what it means to live in Japan or to visit Japan this is the cost of keeping a clean country [Laughter] [Music] earring lighting yes he oh we all have our camera ony what did you say about SRA I say they need SRA SRA we need your voal so much electricity so much electricity the candidate no I think we found our candidate here [Music] out of 10 uh maybe I thing is I got that late but the mes that I’ve watched I give a experience just say the is now the experience was amazing like it makes you feel like you are in Japan you know what I mean like it’s like I’m here I made it my dream has come true and you’re just like it’s one of those cultural things that you need to experience guys like please I’m so happy out of 10 why you saying it so fast how about you ma’am out of 10 um I would give it a six why it wasn’t my kind of scene okay but it was a great experience what wasn’t your kind of scene about it I don’t know I don’t like there you have it guys I want to ask her oh you want to ask yes I give it a 10 why I I liked it I feel like suo is my new thing why because it’s very like a tech man it’s very like it’s really the Heat and the bombs and the muscles I don’t like the BS and the Thunder not the boms the mus thighs Thunder thigh cuz guys I’m always deadlifting and those guys have got thunder thighs for days and the matches are very short so you just need to get in there do your thing and you’re done you know I like that about it yes and yeah it is a different kind of experience in Japan especially given how you know shy people are they the atmosphere is different so if you are in Japan please do check out Sumo in Japan great experience 10 over 10 I loved it thank they’ve convened to talk about who is the winner so anticipation awaits is it AA or homi who won that round okay seems we have a decision drum roll please it’s so quiet now let’s see people are not happy okay okay and who is it I it seems no no no so they’re saying that that one is loose the other one is oh here DOI one
