marissa nathan hensley and jj after living in our rv for six years we’re taking a 10-week adventure detour to visit our 50th state of hawaii life is a journey let go and get going last week to celebrate our nine-year anniversary nathan and i headed to the north shore of oahu to swim with sharks and hike one of the most popular and most beautiful hikes in hawaii the alamala this week things get a bit more complicated as we try to navigate all of the ins and outs of reservations in hawaii and we’re not off to a great start on june 2nd at 4 00 a.m availability will be released when did they change it it said june 1st so we’re going to get to 4 a.m yeah tomorrow yeah i will be up good it’s good for us though it’s not good if you want to get up at 4am well nobody wants to get up at 4am that’s how there’s only six sites so one thing we’ve learned about hawaii is when they call it island time things don’t actually open when they’re supposed to open people don’t actually it’s a slower pace it’s a slower nobody’s worried so it’s frustrating when for days they’ve been promoting that this was going to open at 7 00 am today for us um because that leads to the second thing we’ve learned in hawaii is that everything’s booked up and it books up fast so say hello to our hey what year is this van 2012 2012. i don’t even want to know it’s our 2012 honda odyssey van that we’ve rented in hawaii [Music] [Applause] now we are super pumped to have this van because the alternative which is what we’re seeing a lot of we’re not only running into reservation problems we’re running into problems with vehicles in hawaii 600 bucks a day some even going for a thousand we’re hearing and we’re not even talking about hotel rooms but rental cars daily rates for a car in hawaii right now because when covet hit and then tourism took a downturn here which is a big part of the economy they had all these vehicles sitting here not being used as they started to sell off the vehicles ship the vehicles away but then when everybody started coming back in hawaii flooding in hawaii faster than the vehicles are coming back into hawaii like there’s no vehicles paradise rent-a-car tells us they’ve been crazy busy and you can tell just by looking at the lot which is almost empty so a lot of people are doing we’re doing and the locals rightfully so are taking full advantage of it they are renting out their own personal vehicles on something called toro it’s like an airbnb for vehicles which is a great idea in theory but what’s happening is a lot of locals are with their new turo account instead of renting things for like 100 a day 150 a day once they saw people were really flooding in they started cancelling those reservations people had made and then relisting them at double the price but a lot of people have nothing to drive when they get to hawaii when they thought they did when they made the reservation or they’re paying two to three times the price to buy something from people who have upped their price of what’s left [Music] oh you gonna go in your pajamas or what’s it do we got out the door as early as we could so we’ll just get dressed here these sleeves are just a little bit shorter see my farmer town farmer’s tents are hot they’re in you didn’t you’re making it hot yeah that’s right you’re bringing it back can you fix it if you don’t wear sunglasses then then your eyelashes will grow so long that you can’t see where’d you hear that uh walker told me ah it’s blurry that’s pretty in it look at that there it is it’s right up there wow buddy look at that like a little toy this is beautiful up here so glad it’s paved all the way even though it is straight up you get some great views good job girl so in addition to the normal trail they have a side track trail hold up what’s this called the top the todd pool here comes mommy mommy and wow that’s looking awesome buddy it’s a water park here a natural water park yeah almost there good job we made it guys it’s a little bit of a haul down here and you want to check on the water levels for sure because you don’t want to come when waves are crashing in on these tide pools so if you hike to the lighthouse that you see up there you can hike down this path here to get to these tide pools at the makkapu lighthouse trail there’s different tide pools so this one it looks like it’s not ever coming in look at these look at the fish buddy that’s awesome look at the fish it’s just like a like hensley said a natural theme park aquarium right now [Music] this one looks a little prettier over here but it’s got way more of the tide coming in it so we uh we decided to do that it’s crazy we just did that even crazier we gotta do that going up i feel like this is a lot of what hawaii is about like getting off the paved trail it’s more work and sometimes i like to say you get there and there’s not that many people that’s not the case here there’s actually quite a few people down here but it’s definitely awesome when you can find off the paved trail you look like a mermaid a mermaid and there’s a blowhole over here somewhere huh there it is [Music] [Laughter] that’s awesome [Music] got the goods when you hear about hawaii everybody says you have to go to dukes you have to eat at dukes well we could not eat it dudes jj fell asleep the timing just did not work out but they have it to go and i at least got the hula pie and we’re going to tell you if it’s as good as they say it is had to fall asleep right when we were going to do this okay you snooze you lose it’s wakiki is definitely a very touristy area it’s in honolulu and we have people tell us a lot like why are you going to wahoo why are you going to honolulu but that’s the thing right that’s it so we’ve loved our time on oahu there are so many beautiful off the beaten path things to do but um the city is definitely as busy as they say it is so even me just picking up this food i mean just seeing the beach and how how many people are on the beach and in the water and in the restaurant and then we’re just kind of like having our own private beach because we’re out of the city and getting our pot to go so it’s a beautiful city though it’s just awesome here the traffic has been nuts though yeah nuts this is ice cream we better get on it macadamia nut ice cream on a cookie crust um no just kidding yes this is my first crest spot hey the food in hawaii has been legit everything the food is good here dale and angela on team journey on patreon thank you so much for this recommendation because we would have missed out on this and this is great speaking of desserts too there’s leonard’s bakery here that has these portuguese donuts and they are so hot and got you can get them with custard in the middle and that is a must check out bakery as well just woke up this morning 3 50 a.m because these sites were supposed to open up at 4 00 am guess what they did not open up at 4am like they said on the website and like they said when we called them on the phone i don’t know when they opened but people been up all night just booking like crazy on here so uh yeah not good let’s see what we can get and we’re trying to book a campsite it’s what we’re doing for what we’ve got coming up in maui and there’s only six campsites at this national park campground yes six the original dates and the original side we wanted are gone but if we choose a different side and if we cancel our reservations at a different place to get to this campground at a different time okay hey we’re in we got a reservation now i gotta figure out what to do for the next four hours until everybody gets up so so originally when we booked the wahoo we booked a high-rise condo in waukee overlooking the mountains the ocean the other high-rises we could walk to everything in waukee it seemed like a really awesome idea we booked it over two months in advance and then three weeks before we were supposed to come to hawaii it got cancelled so we went back to the drawing board and looked and we found this house which was not on airbnb before and thought man same price range thought man let’s do it let’s do this it’s great for the kids it’s actually more space it’s next to the ocean and it’s at the beach it’s on the behalf it’s at the beach and so i think as we go through all these logistical hoops and maybe you go through hoops with travel whether it’s rving or whether it’s flying or whether it’s airbnbs whatever you’re dealing with i think sometimes you just gotta trust the process you have the confidence that you know we’re glad that high rise didn’t happen now like i keep catching myself since we’ve gotten hawaii saying wow maybe that’s what we’re doing we’re just chasing wow i don’t know about you but like when i had a routine and the house and the nine to five like i just didn’t catch myself saying wow that often if it was a wow it was probably like a bad wow that’s just been traveling it’s it’s like we’re just it’s a good channel name i don’t know chasing wow we’re like we’re just looking for those moments where we walk up we see it or we experience and we’re just like we’re just like wow even one of those days huh i could see in your eyes do you want to switch with jeremiah let’s see jeremiah [Music] my goodness first look babe oh wow things you can do while you’re out in the water as well it’s just avoid standing or sitting or watching it’s one of hawaii’s most important natural treasures this is the story [Music] it was definitely some work to get here there’s some steps as with most stuff with hawaii like marissa had to well how you reserve this what three four days ago you it’s all a ticketing system now yeah it’s two days in advance but it’s changing all the time so right now you you get there and you reserve your time two days in advance for what becomes available there used to be like 3 500 people a day that visited this area and so with the ticket system now it’s like 7.50 so it’s limiting the amount of people that come and visit so you have to get a ticket in advance when you can do the math the 750 is way less than 3 500. so like we got it on the dot you know at 7am i think or whatever to get in here we made it [Music] no this is still we just got to stand here for a moment kind of take it in um wow hensley i got a question for you what’s the state fish of hawaii [Laughter] jamie has a horrible time with anything in hawaii didn’t say hawaii to like two weeks in [Laughter] [Music] it’s like you’re laughing at the end it goes aha did you imagine like what’s what’s a tennessee state fish catfish probably i can do that [Music] [Music] this is definitely some of the most epic snorkeling i know we’ve ever done but typically our snorkeling has not went according to plan you want to get in the water no there are species of fish here that you will not see anywhere else in the world so definitely some very colorful and vibrant and just beautiful fish in this water [Music] so as the day goes on more and more people are allowed in for their tickets and you can tell the longer you’re out there the more cloudy the water gets so definitely get here as early as possible because i can already tell the difference an hour in how stirred up the water gets to hensley did you see anything today in the water what’d you see i saw a box fish box fish what did the foxfish say you like that huh dad joke dan joke all the way and strike fish i saw a parrot fish a parrot fish did it repeat what you said no yeah i love going snorkeling with hensley because she tells me what all the fish are i did know the one thing we saw though i knew what that eel was an eel it was like this no yes it was right under us and i was trying to swim and get hensley
