1868年1月1日(旧暦の慶応3年12月7日)に神戸港が開港し、国際港湾都市として歩みはじめました。
外国人の居住・営業の場として外国人居留地が造成され、商館等の近代的な建造物が建設されました。その街並みは整然として美しく外国人にも「東洋で最も美しい」と称賛されました。
