In March 2020, I landed in Taiwan for a three-day layover. The next day airports around the world started closing due to the pandemic.
A three-day layover has turned into almost a year. It has been an amazing experience.

Until May 2021, there was no a better country to be during coronavirus than Taiwan.
The pandemic was been handled well, with less than ten deaths and relatively no community outbreak until May 2021.
From the pandemic’s onset, life was relatively normal with not a single lockdown through April 2021.
I will miss this many things about Taiwan, especially the freedom experienced while the rest of the world had locked-down.
After I left Taiwan, they experienced their first closures and restrictions due to the pandemic.

So as I get ready to leave Taiwan, there’s definitely some things I’m going to miss. Here’s my list of 10 things… in kind of an order. But number one – Wenshan Hot Springs in Taroko. It is incredible, it’s like heaven I don’t think it gets any better

A hot spring in this setting, it’s so beautiful and if you want to go over here to the left, it’s like a cold spring. Where I am right now, it’s pretty hot, so we’re going to go up, just around the ridge there. and it gets even hotter.

It is the best therapy for the mind and the body, feels so good. And it’s just amazing. You have the hot and cold plunge You have the Taroko amazing scenery, and when there’s a blue sky, it is paradise. Back Bay by Hengchun in the south of Taiwan.

I love it there, the most beautiful sunsets, made some good friends there. I even had a pal, Chico, my dog . And the surfing, and the beautiful oceans. Definitely gonna miss Back Bay. Some of the people, some of the friends I met

And… to me it’s one of the most special parts of Taiwan. The cute factor, you know what I mean little kids on scooters with their moms or their parents, so cute. We go into one of these side alleys and the kids are… little kids are practicing hip-hop

When you come around the corner and there’s… a mall and the women are out doing their dance. It’s just the cute factor of Taiwan and it’s everywhere. The safety and the calmness of Taiwan is special you know, I think it’s like the safest country in the world.

It’s just nice, you can leave your key in the scooter No one’s going to take your scooter I can leave my laptop out at a coffee shop never had a problem. It’s just nice to walk out the door in the morning and not have any worry about tension, confrontation or friction [whip cracking]

And you can just really go about your day and that part of like any sort of tension or danger is more or less removed. So that’s been very nice. So I’m born in Kobe, Japan. I love everything Japan. I love Japan and Taiwan has a really cool Japan-factor…

There was once over a hundred Shinto shrines throughout Taiwan Now, there’s only like a handful and this is the most well-preserved one It’s quite amazing, pretty beautiful. Let’s take a look around. It’s kind of nice, you can almost go on a make-believe trip to Japan in places of Taiwan.

So I really enjoyed that part of being in Taiwan where you can experience little pieces of Japanese culture or little symbols that remind me of being in Japan. I’m gonna miss stinky tofu. Stinky tofu, I love it. I love anything fermented, sauerkraut and what have you…

And stinky tofu has that delicious cabbage that comes with it and… the spice and… well, if I have any social engagements or meetings, I don’t do the garlic, but if I’m solo for that night definitely partake in the garlic and just enjoy stinky tofu. So I know it’s kind of trendy,

But I love Din Tai Fung and I’m going to miss it. Just walking into the restaurant, you see all the fresh good ingredients Oh… how I’ll miss Din Tai Fung, the food is so awesome Its fresh local ingredients, seasonal vegetables, amazing service. And this is the original one in the world.

And now they’re all over the world but if you come to Taipei, you got to see this one. Hi, hào chī, so good… yeah. The chef is right there making everything preparing everything in the kitchen. Oh I love Din Tai Fung. And really close to stinky tofu. I love tofu pudding

And I can tell you I have like four or five spots around the country of Taiwan that I love extra. This one I think… may be the best How long have you been here? How many years? 25… 25 years. My… one of my favorite. So yummy! Tofu pudding. Dòu huā.

I love sweet potatoes, and Taiwan has really good sweet potatoes. It’s like my staple healthy food. And I love how in Taiwan on the street or you can even go into 7-11 and get the most delicious sweet potatoes at all hours of the day, especially I love the ones that are being like

Like wood-roasted and those special old ovens. Fresh sweet potatoes in Taipei. It doesn’t get better than this… nice, wood-roasted oven and I’m in sweet potato heaven. When sweet potatoes are not available on the street, you can just walk into any Family Mart or 7-11, you’ll have fresh baked sweet potatoes right here.

If a 7-11 is not handy for sweet potatoes, we have these great corner shops right here… hào chī. It’s the best, right? Cool! The tea culture so… It’s so cool to go in those little tea shops and sip on hot tea with the owner. Good. Now we’re going to have some black tea

We… hěn hǎo hē… yes [speaking Chinese… delicious] We have a lot of Oolong tea gonna have a few sips of black tea. I love bubble tea. So I love how you can go to any street corner, any block in Taiwan. And the best… cold brewed tea.

However, my special requests like… the bubble tea. I always asked they rinse the sugar off. For me, it makes extra delicious. So that was 10 things I will miss about Taiwan but there’s more… there’s a few other things I’m going to miss. One is the exploring building factor.

I mean… Tainan going around Snail Alley and exploring… so much fun. And I think Taiwan is loaded with an explore-ability factor. Another thing – the coffee culture. One of Taiwan’s best. I think in Taiwan they are perfectionist when it comes to coffee and it’s so delicious, extra delicious.

I love coffee. So definitely gonna miss it. But item number one. Definitely number one. Definitely number one…. Nǐ hǎo The first and foremost… What do you think about this? We got to live in coronavirus. Concerts, Christmas, New Years . During coronavirus, this is how it’s been the whole time in Taiwan.

No… no lockdown, nothing ever closed. Everybody has been out in public like this shopping and going to restaurants and drinking coffee. So this is by far the best thing about Taiwan – especially in the past year, because while the rest of the world was closed down or lockdown at some point…

For just about every country in the world, Taiwan handled the situation well, no one died. Early on, there were like six or seven deaths attributed to coronavirus, but they handled it – the whole pandemic incredibly. How many cities around the world got to do this? Another reason to love Taiwan,

Celebrated 2021 in-style, full firework show, enjoying with other people Gotta love Taiwan! Happy 2021! Malls, restaurants… nothing ever closed Now that’s definitely reason number one — Gonna miss Taiwan… they got this thing figured out… they never had a lockdown. It’s been all good… bye-bye Hello [Philip James] Hello [pilot]

Let’s go! [Philip James]
