Welcome to our tour and day in the life of our winnebago truvado we’re marissa nathan hensley and jj after living in our rv for six years we’re taking a 10-week adventure detour to visit our 50th state of hawaii life is a journey let go and get going

Last week we took the van to haleakala national park to watch one of the most epic sunrises of our life we hiked into a dormant volcano and jj got so tired this week we’re peeling back the curtain and giving you a real-life tour of the ups and downs when you’re tired you make

Bad decisions this is not a quiet generator at all of living in a class b van with a family of four what’s up fellow journeyers so today we’re super excited to do something i don’t know that we’ve ever done this on a tour video so this is

Going to be a combo of a tour of the winnebago travato 59g it’s going to be a pros and cons of living in this we have lived in an rv six years but it’s usually we’ve done fifth wheels class a’s we have never done a class b band

It’s been nathan’s dream he’s always been like let’s do van life let’s live in a van and i’m like i mean i love the flexibility that they offer but you know we’ve got two kids so we thought what if we just give it a try

Be clean it’s gonna have kids it’s gonna have the four of us i follow a lot of van life on instagram and it always just looks so beautiful but i know with rving it’s it is challenging it’s really challenging but i’ve always wanted this amazing view out the back doors of a van

And honestly this has been my favorite part of traveling in this van check out this view it’s just been my dream to like sit in bed i’ve been looking at the stars at night drink my coffee yeah this is definitely a hack as far as like rv

Travel and seeing places and you may have seen in the b-roll too just 100 feet behind us that’s right here too like you can walk up some stairs and go out and you can see the sunrise sunset whatever we’re in a regular parking spot with this van we can go anywhere

Pretty much and park in normal spots and just go about our day and live in our van so this van is 21 feet you’re still maybe barely longer than a regular parking space but if you can hang over all past this rear bumper yeah you got to watch out

It’s crazy low to the ground on this but if you can hang over all you can get into pretty much a normal parking space which is awesome oh hey hinsley’s up hey girl the width is also not crazy wide so it’s not too bad as

Far as i mean look at this you know plenty of room on the parking space you got these back doors they can swing all the way open if we want to you’ve got a net that you can put here if you want to block mosquitoes and stuff we are up in

A mountain right now we do not need the net do you have the hitch you want to add something onto the bumper on the hitch to be standard as far as hookups of what you’re going to see on most rvs water electric you got sewer you got

Gray tank you’ve got 30 amp over there for the plug there are no hookups in hawaii so we’re not even plugged in so if you want specific specs on the van here they are you can pause the video and check those out what have you thought about the

Vans good so living small whether that be in a large rv or even in a van they’re definitely sacrifices and challenges of living small things go downhill really fast everything has a place and everything needs to get put back in its place and so it actually is like this constant

Ongoing challenge of staying organized that’s great for for some personalities like nathan he’s like thriving on it but i do it because of moments like this i just get to cuddle with my girl on top of a volcano in hawaii checking out this view i don’t know if

You’ll be able to see it all because we decided to live small and to live on less and just spend more time together as a family and just let go All right making our way to safeway so here’s a regular pretty regular spot i could have pulled up a little more if i needed to all right get out your seat marissa and hensley went in the safe way to get some groceries you’re sleepy cp huh so if you’ve got a

Family and you’re wondering it it is possible to get a car seat in here it is tight and this is the costco one let’s go and this is a pretty small car seat too so a large car seat probably would not even fit in the setup now one of my

Bigger cons about the van and the entire setup is the power management and how that works so like our fifth wheel for instance back in tennessee we have lithium we have solar we have inverters we have you know basically everything is always continuously working regardless of whether we’re using these usb ports or

If we’re using a regular 120 plug like it’s just kicking back and forth is doing its thing well the van now this is 2016 maybe the newer ones aren’t doing this but this van even my 2015 dodge ram truck has an inverter in the cab area where we can physically

Plug something in that’s a 120 plug you know like this but this van has zero um inverters or anything like that so all we have is the 12 volt plugs uh you know all over the place so we got 120 plug here 120 here 120 there which is fine you

Know when you’re charging phones and you know maybe watches and small stuff but then you start getting bigger stuff like laptops you get into our camera gear like it gets difficult and we need those 120 plugs that are all over the van but we can’t use them unless we turn on

The second thing which supplies power in this band which is the generator so i can hit this button right here the start button it’s going to start the generator you know and boom we do have all the 120s are going to kick on the microwave is going to start working all our plugs

Are going to start working which is fine and well and good but it’s another step to have to do that i wish they just had like a beefy alternator that could run everything except for maybe the ac or something like that um ideally that’d be the way to go and

Maybe even lithium batteries where it can handle the load better and that kind of thing because the biggest downside and probably my biggest gripes with the setup is i don’t know if you can hear that this generator this is not a quiet generator at all so every time when we use the microwave

Every time i want to plug up a laptop every time i want to plug up a battery charger for my drone or battery charger for my camera like we have to turn the generator on because we don’t have access to these plugs and the noise so if you imagine we’re staying in this

National parks where it’s pretty much tents and maybe a few camper vans that don’t have generators there’s only six sites like it is not a big campground it’s super quiet and then here we come with our honk and loud generator having to turn it on just to

Charge a few batteries so overall just not crazy about the way the power’s done in the van at least in 2016. newer years probably a totally different deal one thing i do like and it’s all or nothing whether you like it or not type thing

But it has a truma system built in that has the water heater i think this has the endless hot water heating as well i believe which doesn’t do you a lot of good without hookups but it does have it so we got the truma water heater the truma controls also controls the furnace

In the van so it’s kind of nice to have all that in one spot so i do like i do like that system it’s almost like a lot of the things put into the van were meant for the van to be on full hookups

To me if you’re in a van you’re a van to be mobile to be moving around like you don’t want to be relying on full hookups all the time put a beefy alternator put two beefy alternators like put a ton of solder on the roof put some lithium

Batteries in whatever you got to do and just get the generator out of there which i think everything has trended that way 2016 not there yet hey girls oh my goodness oh i’m not gonna look so bad i know man sunrise i’m tired i said give me the

Biggest one you got i think there’s an official name but i’d just say give me the biggest one you got what is that it’s a cake it’s a what cake pop cake pop you gotta whisper it is it that awesome kind of cake pop unicorn whoa do you want to see it

Sure let’s see it can she eat that right now she’s already getting it out no i want to show my daddy he will go through the what not to do when you’re shopping for groceries in this like marissa immediately shop for a full week i’ll show you that clip

This will fit right oh my goodness [Laughter] there we go oh come on is it taboo to put a loaf of bread in the yeah don’t put it in your bag there we go that works [Laughter] oh that’s essential when you’re tired you make bad decisions paw patrol

Yeah it was on sale yeah this box of cereal was almost eight dollars when i bought it at the beginning of the week but it was on sale for five you just can’t wait for anybody you digging into it is that good do you like

It jj like a dollar a bite right there fridge i believe is a six qubit which is bigger than our airstream one but obviously not as big as our residential in our grand design we have it works i think you’re just shopping you know for our family for instance shopping for

A week we’re gonna shop in maybe three four days at a time so the fridge can run shore power it can run off your 12 volt battery power and it can run off propane we typically just leave it on propane it seems we’re told it works the best on that yes

Everybody just found a seat okay where’s your seat put your feet through there you go good job make no mistake this is a tight space so if you’re a family for looking at buying and living in this like props to you like this is too small we cannot we

Can not as a family for i feel like we just run into each other too much i try to take things out of boxes i think that helps too but or if you push really hard that helps yeah a lot of times if you just take things out of boxes yeah

There we go and then they got these little buttons that lock everything in place pantry stuff here a little bit here a little bit here this came pretty stocked though they had um some plates and bowls and cups and we just makes logical sense that’s probably

Where we would put that stuff in yeah and we’ve got a pot and we do a french press and bowl for our coffee in the morning what do we do about coffee i love what she says i mean it’s bowl we’ve got three drawers down here for storage silverware

This one i think was more silverware and i’ve moved some stuff around so we’ve got some cans and what’s that mac and cheese bottom one is the coffee oh that’s the coffee stuff okay yeah so that’s where the coffee cups and french press the coffee goes well if this was

Ours i think we would probably have some stuff on the wall here maybe maybe some stuff hanging down and there’s definitely more you could do with the space it’s still really generic right now but um yeah because you’ve got you’ve got a little stove yeah two burner stove a sink this is neat

Like flips up and flips down which when these are down you’ve got a little counter space but when we’re using these two like there is no counter space i’m in it really is that is that the tour of the that’s the kitchen i actually uh was chopping vegetables while sitting

Here yesterday so you just have to get creative with the space i think what the cool things about the van and hinslow is even asking about this she’s like is today a travel day i’m like well in the van like every day’s a travel day so it’s kind of

A hassle when you have to leave let’s say you just want to do a quick errand it’s a pain to take the van know that everybody has to be in it if possible or everything guys have to be travel ready to do that so that’s kind

Of a pain that’s a downside um some people you know work on that by having like a moped on the back or maybe some e-bikes but the big pro is nothing really ever feels like a travel day anymore it’s like you just you just go and you know we’re sitting here in the

Safeway parking lot we can continue just to hang out if we want to we could do lunch if we want to we could take a nap if we want to i mean it’s just uh it all kind of blends your travel day your play day your you know stay day whatever there’s a

Real blend of that you definitely have to be in the adventurous mindset because we’ve went by and saw people doing their hawaiian vacations at resorts and i mean that looks absolutely beautiful and relaxing and i think this is more of an adventurous way to explore we’re having to use baby wipes instead

Of a luxurious shower at times but i think it’s because of how we get to travel and all we get to see we’re not stuck on one resort or having to be shuttled everywhere like we’re on our own schedule and we can pick out what we want to do and the

Timing we want to do it and what works for our family and it’s just a an adventurous way to travel side note look how close these airplanes are to the safeway wow We’re at poho kippa beach and it started to rain so we got another epic view we backed up to the ocean here with the van that’s another good thing about having the van is we show up it’s gonna rain for a little bit in hawaii even the rain

Is magical like it’s just most of the time this like amazing mist and it actually feels really nice so um the cool thing about the van is we could just hang out in the van until the rain passes by and then go check out this beach because there is a really

Awesome surprise on this speech i want to show y’all i see pessy pasty it’s raining but it doesn’t matter does it wait it’s raining it’s raining we’ll just hang out in here you like this spot uh-huh if you want to be alone this is where you belong oh really yeah i’ve got

A surprise to show you on this beach what is it you’ll see so work is becoming more of a routine with people that are rving have the generator going had the ac on marissa took the kids and i i need to edit again the the con of

Being in the van is that if i want to edit while everyone’s in the van it’s almost impossible the pro of having the van is hopefully we can go somewhere where they can all go outside disperse and then i get to work on the van they get to do something epic outside we’ve

Got our home here if they need to come back for jj to nap and go back to get a snack just grab something we got everything with us in the van it is a cute turtle say hi buddy like a high kick turtle hi big turtle these turtles are so cute

Look at this one right over here Oh It’s a lot of dancing in a van it’s a constant dance we’re calling this the don’t ever walk in your zone like you only get to be in the zone if you’re actively doing something otherwise be on the back bed near the bathroom every zone is an active zone when

There’s four in this space it’s jj nope this is the active zone you need to go over here as far as clothing storage uh this is what we’ve done this is still our suitcase this is the one that wouldn’t collapse and so we store it here you

Guys have seen our videos we did one bag carry over my bag collapses it’s a backpack resist collapses but this one is the kids that’s the roller it does not collapse so it’s there dirty clothes diapers we packed one bag for two and a half months so everything

Fits in here pretty well but it definitely makes it challenging as far as laundry and figuring that out okay all right you’re in that you’re in the active all right there you go all right go find a seat over there you guys good hey you look really guilty you’re not

Pushing these buttons are you no no okay thank you for being good here’s hensley’s lunch i didn’t get him up close when i had the bag out are you serious i’m totally serious all right here we go again hey hey don’t push the buttons i know it’s very tempting can you play with

Your police car or something so we keep everything stored in the uh packing cubes these are the tripped version from tim and finn and we just keep everything kind of organized so jj has his own bag this is like the swimsuit bag so if i know

They’re going swimming i can just grab a swimsuit bag they have a nighttime bag with all their pajamas so when i know it’s pajama time i grab out the pajama bag so everybody’s in here and then hensley’s got her own packing cube as well so that makes it a little bit easier having

Everybody’s kind of organized or grouped together so i know if we’re having a beach day or night time we also have a lot of our clothes in here and then more of the tripped bags marissa was talking about the tasking bag everything’s kind of compressed if it needs to be

Into this spot up here the bed does fold up some days we’ve been folding it up some days we just leave it down depends on how the day’s going tucking the pillows up here there we go the bed’s up to us it’s not that huge of an advantage because kinsley fell in love

With sleeping down here and so at that point we just keep a bunch of stuff stored in these two drawers we don’t use very often so we don’t have to access it much same thing with the stuff down here like that’s our backpacks that are just stuff

Down in there the stuff we need quick access to from the outside we put it in the back like that so we can just open the doors and grab it real quick now overall for us i think i do like i know winnebago makes different layers on

This they have a 59k i think where it’s just like two single beds and make a king bed in the back like for us this is a better layout to have two different sleeping spaces because we’ve got this sleeping space in the back that i’ve shown you guys then

We’ve got this is an absolute disaster it gets trashed quickly but this table comes down a cushion lays on top of that this slides over this whole area makes another bed so you’ve got the bed in the back and then you’ve got the bed up here for us our beds have actually been

So we have to take the time to put this down created a little cubby back here for hensley she sleeps over here you like that bed under there yep yep and then jj’s actually done really well we’ve created a pallet down here and he sleeps down here like the smaller the

Space you get the more convertible and multi-faceted things need to be but at the same time you’re going to spend time converting those things versus the bigger the rv you get you have a dedicated bed you have dedicated spaces you’re not moving things around as much it’s more versatile but it’s more hassle

In one second do you like tetris yeah there’s a lot of temperatures the big two things for me as far as like maybe cons uh one was the power stuff i talked about too it’s just the shower area without first glance this seems great because it’s a actually for a van

This is a very big shower area but at least for us the way we’re using it moving around fast we have nowhere to dump at all like like having the large shower area with no option to convert it into much else of anything else is just not great i’ve

Seen some of the newer vans remember those we’ve seen where they had like um just like a really tiny it could be a closet it could be a toilet i think you could even convert it a shower now this bathroom is kind of unique it can be a shower

A regular toilet style bathroom or a full closet or any combination of they had everything in that one spot instead of if you look at this i mean this is a i mean i don’t know 20 of our space maybe 25 of our space that we use as a

Changing room and that’s about it that’s the reason i wanted to rent this fan is because i really found it handy to have a bathroom on board for traveling for not getting up in the middle of the night and having to go out and find an outhouse like it’s glorious i love

Having that the toilet to us would be awesome to have maybe something slides out or something convertible but to have an entire dedicated shower sink toilet area a really nice outdoor shower even that an outdoor shower of some sort that would like wrap around and maybe they

Make that i don’t know um and then like a shower head that could go here here’s a we do have this outdoor i’m gonna call it a shower but an outdoor handle and this connects here to this port here but this is where it’s at my goodness opening these back doors

Just having the world at your fingertips behind you popcorn with a view it’s like a movie hey you guys are in the walkway here it’s a whole new mindset rving wise to know that your home is is kind of everywhere it’s almost where you park it what the people
