 2 Chome-9-89 Sumiyoshi, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, 558-0045
This is the headquarters of some 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines.
Main Shrine “Sumiyoshi-zukuri
The main hall, called “Sumiyoshi-zukuri,” is one of the oldest styles in the history of shrine architecture,
and all four main shrines are designated national treasures.
The roof is made of hiwadabuki (cypress bark roofing) and gabled with a tsumairi-shiki kiritsuma-zukuri (gabled gable roofing) style.
The interior is divided into an outer sanctuary and an inner sanctuary.
The pillars are painted with niwari (reddish brown lacquer) and the walls are painted with gofun (powdered oyster shells).
The present main hall was constructed in 1810 during the Edo period.

02:20 Taiko Bridge. The bridge over the front shrine pond is also called “Taiko-bashi,” the symbolic “drum bridge” of Sumiyoshi.
Some people believe that just crossing this bridge will bring “o-harai,” and many visitors cross it to pay their respects at the main shrine.
