Pretty much any type of animal on a stick here hey I’m aana Pope and today we’re going on a culinary Journey Through the vibrant Niki Market in the heart of Kyoto Japan join me as we explore this bustling five block long shopping street affectionately known as Kyoto’s kitchen we’ll dive into the
World a Japanese street food tasting everything from tantalized Emoji to fermented amazaki I’ll be your guide through this Maze of over 100 shops and restaurants each offering a unique slice of Japanese food culture in the heart of Kyoto let’s go We’re in Kyoto Japan and right now we’re entering the famous Nishiki market so I’m going to take you around and just do kind of like a little tour of what the market is like we sell everything from crab sticks to tampura and they even have octopus on a
Stick if you can see right here and this is D fuku which is like a famous moochi here in Kyoko so yeah pretty much you can get whatever you want to eat right here in the Shiki market and they have all range of prices it’s actually known here as koto’s Local
Kitchen so that’s kind of like the translation of it but here you can see they actually do sell just regular produce they have a clever way of keeping these apples cold right here in the cold water you can see this place is huge they have have all different types
Of things and of course they’re souvenirs so I’m just going to keep walking here and showing you what it’s like they also sell the famous beef here so it’s the you know Japan’s famous for their raw beef and they also have these fish on a stick and of course eel so if you’re
Hungry definitely come here because this is where all the food is happening and of course this place is famous for its Origins of raw fish so this used to be a strictly like fish market from what I read back in the 1600s and then it kind of slowly transitioned into a market
That you know today kind of like a retail tourist spot in the late 1800s when they started to get some of their tourists coming in uh but basically this place is nuts you can see some scallops right here some prawns this place has so many people in it right now
Some more scallops it looks like getting flamed and lots and lots and lots of seafood this looks like it’s chestnuts so if you like chestnuts and of course they have every type of Mochi this is like every flavor of Mochi known to man and this place also is known for
Besides the raw fish which you can see here they’re also really known for having pickles so pickled veggies of all different types um usually cucumber and cabbage and that sort of thing um but basically they have it all here so I’m just kind of going pretty fast because
You can see how how long this actual Market is it’s really really really long here this is a proper Mochi shop and they’re selling all different types of Mochi this one’s definitely my favorite d fuku looks so good I’ll actually buy one of these looks really good got
The so this is the famous D fuku and it’s actually kind of like a powder dut in a way because it’s covered in this like starchy material that if you get it all over yourself how you go so it looks kind of like this and yeah
If you get it on yourself and I wear usually all black that’s probably a bad call but basically if you know you don’t want to get it spilled on you I’m going to eat it carefully it’s pretty good it’s filled with red bean and it’s not actually too sweet
And this one’s really good the Mochi is just kind of chewy if you haven’t had Mochi I recommend giving it a shot it’s really delicious I definitely needed that needed something sweet today you can see they’re selling it here with strawberries so yeah maybe this powder stuff is going to go all
Over my face and look really bad but I’m going to go ahead and try it again this one like almost like Savory because it’s not too sweet um but yeah this Mochi stuff is made from rice flour like a rice starch that they just kind of pound over and over again so it’s
Really a nice Kyoto treat to try out when you’re here in a Shiki Market we’re actually here on a Friday and it’s actually really busy all right so we’re going to just kind of continue on here through the market and I’m going to show you what
They have this is fish cakes so they steam these fish cakes they’re kind of like a sausage made of fish um so it’s all sorts of different types of fish this looks like they have shrimp and all sorts of stuff squid grilling right there you can get pretty much any type
Of animal on a stick here and a Shiki market so whether it’s squid or octopus I’ve seen it all so yeah lots and lots and lots of different food options this is a great place to just kind of Deep dive into Kyoto on day one and kind of
Get your feet wet with the food here in Japan because there’s just so much to kind of take in and so many different types of foods to try out when you’re in Kyoto this is a famous pickle shop so they pickle everything from pumpkins to cucumbers eggplant this is the famous
Daon I guess no photo allowed but this is video come on lady we’re trying to advertise your spot and then this place has just raw fish so you can get fish on the go like Sashimi or sushi and we’re here in the end of June so it’s basically the start of a June
Summer here in Japan it’s hot it’s humid I’m sweating and yeah this place is hot so maybe don’t wear pants like I’m wearing and maybe wear something something a little bit more breathable because it’s going to be hot and steamy here as you can see these guys are
Trying to cool down their raw fish with some dry ice and of course there’s lots of little shops you know everything here if you want to grab like a Ramen or some souvenirs they pretty much have everything you want all right here so if you do come to Koto whether it’s 24
Hours a day trip or you’re here for 3 or 5 days make sure not to skip this one because it’s definitely like the quintessential thing to do here in Kyoto I don’t think it’s overrated I think it’s a great way to kind of see Kyoto and just kind of taste the food
Especially all the Delicacies and things that they’re famous for such as matcha so matcha just refers to the green tea that they have here and they have this Mochi type dessert you can let me know in the comments below what this one is exactly but I think it’s a typee
Of dessert covered in matcha green tea powder and then this place does like pancakes so they’re like these waffle pancakes and then they shape them in these pans so you can see it getting done this one is shaped like Snoopy and it looks like they’re not
Making any right now but I’ll show you they make them on these grills right here and typically the famous shape for Japan um is the fish so you’ll see it’s shaped like a fish it’s not Savory typically it has sweet red bean inside this shop basically sells like
Everything you would want for seasoning rice and of course there’s lots of bars here this one’s selling crab sticks so you can get real crab this might be imitation crab yeah imitation crab one stick one big stick for 400 Yen that’s just a little bit more than $2 so the prices
Aren’t very expensive I think that’s one of the things that I was shocked the most about here in Japan especially Kyoto it’s different for you know Tokyo but the prices aren’t very expensive you can see how incredibly crowded it is and they all of course sell sake you can try samples of
Sake this is really good amazake that’s my that’s fermented like a fermented rice drink so if you’re familiar with like kombucha it’s kind of like a rice or Chata kombucha so I’m actually returned back to the amazake place and I think I’m going to actually order one so this is the
Amazake it looks kind of like this I love this here so the price is 300 for a small and 500 for a large and this one’s no alcohol he does s sck to get wasted like one and I’m going to go do some more editing so I figure I just want
Something refreshing right now like some rice some fermented rice drink on very oh please one please one one please one please small yeah small oh small okay okay really like this packaging right here so I think this is what it is like a representation of what it looks like
But they have the giant Barrel this one’s like a small barrel and you can see this is what the hake looks like handmade yeah and this one handmade on no no no no oh last juice oh that looks good oh [Laughter] twin waa okay wa heavy duty be oh she o o
O do you like it I like it too smooth too smooth you like stock a lot okay so if you guys come here make sure to come here to this nice man’s soake shop he has really good St all right I got so I like this it’s kind of sour
Sweet and delicious that’s that’s all I got to say about this try it out it’ll make your eyes pop out of your head cuz it’s an interesting flavor and yeah it’s kind of a an acquired taste I would say so either you’ll hate it or you’ll love
It I actually love it and apparently it’s really healthy for you so that’s a plus in my book here you can see it right there and of course here’s the famous octopus on a stick but I’ve seen where they eat like raw octopus like a little
Raw octopus it just yeah I think it was where we just came from Soul Korea and they were doing that so I don’t know if they do that here in Japan as well uh but that would be pretty interesting to find out and you can see all these
Little shops really really cute shops pretty much just so much to see and do here so give yourself like at least a good two hours to kind of take your time and do some shopping they’re also famous for selling knives in this area so like really nice fancy cooking knives so
That’s also a nice momento you can take home with you if you like to cook this place has lots of decorations for Seafood and I think that’s pretty much the end of the market here I was like racing through it but you know when I went through it the first time it took me a good hour hour and a half cuz we sat down had some sake tried out some
Tempura that sort of thing and yeah this place is super cool so I recommend coming to check it out hope you guys enjoy this video I’m going to be here in Kyoto for about another month and then we’re heading to Thailand so if you’d like to follow me on my journey with
