👋🏼 Hello! Today, Jiji goes to Kawazu, Japan for the Kawazu Sakura Festival 2024 (Kawazu Zakura Matsuri 河津桜)~
We started our walk from Kawazu Station, which is about a 3.5 hour train ride from where we were staying in Tokyo (since we didn’t take the express train). We then headed towards the Kawazu river, wherein the bank is lined with vibrant pink cherry blossom trees and yellow rape flowers 🌸🌼🌸🌼 This year’s Kawazu Sakura Festival runs from February 1 to 29. We went on February 14th and the flowers seemed to be in full bloom! It was a perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day 💘
At the end of the video, we shared some photos that Jiji took during our walk. We are not professional photographers and filmmakers, but we love what we do and we enjoy sharing our work. So as our thank-you gift for your support, you may download and use some of them as wallpaper! 💐 And don’t forget to follow Jiji on Instagram: @jiashidesu

📍 KAWAZU is a town located on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms called “Kawazu-zakura”, a variety of cherry trees that typically bloom earlier and longer than the more common Somei Yoshino cherry trees.
The Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms are characterized by their vibrant pink color and larger petals compared to other cherry blossom varieties. These blossoms usually start to bloom in late February and continue through early March, making them one of the earliest signs of spring in Japan. The early blooming period is a result of the warmer climate in the Izu Peninsula compared to other parts of Japan.
The town of Kawazu celebrates the arrival of spring and the cherry blossoms with the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. During the festival, visitors can enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing) by strolling along the Kawazu River, where the cherry trees line the banks. There are also various events, food stalls, and traditional performances that add to the festive atmosphere.
The Kawazu cherry blossoms attract both locals and tourists alike, providing a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of cherry blossoms before the more widespread blooming season across Japan 🌸🌸🌸

Hello! Today, Jiji goes to Kawazu, Japan! Kawazu is a town located on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s about a 3-4 hour train ride from Tokyo. When you exit the Kawazu station, you will be greeted instantly by a beautiful pink tree …and more 🌸 🌸 🌸
Kawazu is known for their beautiful cherry blossoms (sakura) called “Kawazu-zakura” 🌸 It is currently noon that’s why there are a lot of people. We don’t normally like to film or take photos at noon for a few reasons: It’s usually the hottest time of the day, there’s always big crowds, the lighting is harsh…
But for this occasion, we think it’s a great time to visit. Because the bright light illuminates the pink Kawazu-zakura petals. Besides, the crowd makes the place even more lively 😊 Many places in Japan are touristy at any given time, but we don’t let the crowd deter us from going.
Because sometimes, we might miss out on on incredible experiences. But of course, we always remember to be respectful of the place and local culture. Kawazu-sakura is a variety of cherry trees that bloom and flower earlier than the more common “Somei Yoshino” cherry trees found throughout Japan.
While the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms usually bloom in late March to early April, Kawazu-zakura blossoms can start as early as late February. This early blooming period is a distinctive feature of Kawazu-sakura. The Izu Peninsula has a warmer climate, that’s why the sakura trees here bloom earlier than other types of sakura.
The Kawazu region has approximately 8,000 Kawazu-zakura trees. There are also a lot of yellow canola flowers~ We honestly didn’t expect to experience an early sign of spring on this trip. Just a couple of days ago, we were in Hokkaido and we experienced a heavy snow ❄️
But today is February 14th so we decided to come here for our Valentine’s Day date 💘 And it looks like a vibrant pink spectacle here in Kawazu 🌸 This year’s Kawazu-sakura festival schedule is from February 1 to 29. The timing of this festival is geared to allow locals and visitors to
Enjoy “hanami” or cherry blossom viewing~ A popular spot to view them is along the Kawazu River, where the cherry trees line the banks. There are also various events and food stalls that add to the festive atmosphere. They also symbolize the early arrival of spring, which is a unique opportunity to
Experience the beauty of cherry blossoms before the more widespread blooming season across Japan. Another distinctive feature of Kawazu-sakura is that they have a larger and more rounded petals. The colors are often a vibrant pink color and the flowers have a fuller appearance. The Kawazu-zakura trees are generally more smaller than Somei Yoshino trees.
They are often more compact, making them suitable for smaller places or gardens. In fact, there are some stalls that sell Kawazu-sakura trees. You might see them in this video later on~ We can hear some birds chirping!
Jiji was able to take photos of the bird and we will show them at the end of this video~ These birds are the Japanese white-eye, known as “Mejiro” in Japanese. They are a small passerine bird native to Japan and other parts of East Asia.
These birds are highly social and often seen in small flocks. They are known to visit gardens and orchards to feed on fruits, nectar, and insects. They are agile flyers and can move swiftly among branches and foliage. Their melodic calls are a common sound in wooded areas and gardens.
You will hear them from time to time in this video. They add to the natural ambience of the place 🦜 Even the event staff has pink safety wands to match the color of the sakura 🌸 We love Japan’s attention to detail! This is a nice sitting area to take in the beautiful day.
👀 Sakura soft serve ice cream🍦 Thank you for watching all the way until the end! 😊 As a thank you for watching this video and supporting us Jiji will make some of the photos featured in this video available for you to download and use as wallpaper~
