  1. Only in Japan would you see umbrellas in a snow storm. Not only are umbrellas much more popular there, but good snow gear is a lot less common. I remember flying from Michigan to Tokyo in early January back in the 90s. I drove through a blizzard to Detroit Metro and flew out with no problems. There was maybe two inches of snow in Tokyo and we were diverted to Sapporo for about 12 hours before being routed to our destination — at which point we couldn't catch our bus because they didn't want to risk the roads. The Hilton finally sent a bus — and the driver stopped at one point to put on tire chains. I'd never seen chains used in town, especially for so little snow. By the next afternoon it had all melted away.
